Touch the biggest gold bar in Taiwan at the Gold Museum

2025-08-15

Most of us would be happy to own a gold coin, but what about a 220kg gold ingot? Valued at NT$710 million, that’s the weight of the largest gold bar in Taiwan, currently on display at the Gold Museum in New Taipei. You might not be able to own it, but if it’s any consolation, anyone who visits the museum is allowed touch it with their bare hands. Let’s hear more about it.

Gold Museum
When the gold ingot was brought it, it was set in a specially-made theft-proof display case made in Germany. There are two holes on the glass part, so that you can stretch your hand in and have a feel, and touch the noble metal.

You can slide your hand in the hole and feel the metal, but if you’re thinking about sneaking it home, think again. There are three security cameras pointing at the treasure at all times, in addition to infrared sensors, alarm systems, and security standing on guard 24 hours a day. The ingot was at one point the biggest one in the world. Though bigger ones were cast afterwards, it remains the largest one in the world owned by a central bank. It was loaned to the museum in 2004, where it has remained on display, delighting visitors, for more than 20 years.
