Lai highlights chip supply chain, honors industry leaders

2025-09-09

One day ahead of Semicon Taiwan, President Lai Ching-te and top government officials opened the Semicon Network Summit, spotlighting Taiwan’s central role in the global semiconductor supply chain. The president presented economic medals to industry leaders, including TSMC executives and a former Japanese minister, to recognize their efforts in boosting Taiwan’s global tech presence. More than 28 representatives attended the event with calls for stronger international cooperation.

One day before Semicon Taiwan, President Lai Ching-te, Economics Minister Kung Ming-hsin and Science Minister Wu Cheng-wen spoke about global semiconductor supply chains at the Semicon Network Summit.

Lai Ching-te
President
As AI continues to develop rapidly, we’re all clear that competition in the semiconductor industry will only intensify. The distribution of work within the chip industry makes it so that no one country can do it all. By establishing resilient and prosperous supply chains we can enhance the technological competitiveness of our democratic alliances.

The government has set aside hundreds of billions to promote 10 AI infrastructure initiatives in hopes of attracting investment to Taiwan. After all, the industry relies on international collaboration, from design and foundry, to packaging, testing and equipment.

The president presented several Professional Medals by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. One of them was collected by TSMC Co-COO Y.P. Chin on behalf of TSMC CEO C.C. Wei, who was recognized for his leadership in boosting the visibility of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. Another recipient was former Japanese Economics Minister Akira Amari, a key facilitator for TSMC’s expansion to Kumamoto. The event was also attended by representatives from the UK, Belgium and Czechia.

Marek Ženíšek
Czech Minister for Science and Research
The Czech Republic and Taiwan are connected by more than economic [ties]. We share the same values: democracy, freedom, openness and the respect for human potential. The pandemic and geopolitical tensions all remind us that semiconductors are not only a matter of business; they are a matter of strategic resilience.

Semiconductors are core drivers of technology, and they remain a key strength of Taiwan’s even amid geopolitical and economic changes.
