28th Taiwan-France Cultural Awards held in Paris

Every year since 1996, the Taiwan-France Cultural Awards are given to individuals or groups with significant contributions in promoting Taiwan’s arts and culture to Europe. Originally awarded to only French recipients, it’s now open to applicants from all of Europe and Taiwan. For the 28th edition, the awards are given to Jean-Marc Thérouanne from France, who co-founded an Asian film festival; and Tsai Po-cheng from Kaohsiung, a choreographer. The ministry of culture was in Paris for the awards ceremony as well as to renew the cooperation contract for the awards between the Ministry of Culture and France’s Academy of Moral and Political Sciences.

This is the Institut de France in Paris, which was established more than 200 years ago and houses the national academies of France. On Tuesday, the Taiwan-France Cultural Awards ceremony was held right here.

This is a day of great honor for me personally. It’s the first time for me to express my utmost gratitude as Taiwan’s minister of culture to all of you dedicated to promoting culture exchange between Taiwan and Europe.

Minister of Culture Li Yuan was also at the ceremony as co-host. The awards are given to individuals or organizations from Europe or Taiwan who have contributed to the prize’s objectives. One of the winners this year is Jean-Marc Thérouanne from France, who co-founded the Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas. Over the years, the festival has screened more than 80 Taiwanese productions, bringing stories from Taiwan all the way to Europe.

The Vesoul International Film Festival of Asian Cinemas was established in 1995. We hope to allow more people to get to know and moreover, take to Taiwan through films.

The other award recipient is choreographer Tsai Po-cheng from Kaohsiung. His dance company’s production “Floating Flowers” won the audience award and the dance company production award at the 2014 International Choreographic Competition Hannover in Germany.

Only when you really try to put things in practice will you discover how difficult things really are.

The 38-year-old founded and leads the only Taiwanese dance company mainly active in Europe. Tsai said even though they’re so far away, he insists on having the company stay entirely Taiwanese.

There’s one thing I really insist upon, which is every one of my teams must be fully made in Taiwan. That way the works presented on the European stage would be clearly known as Taiwan’s.

Members of the jury from France insisted on awarding Tsai, because they said they saw immense potential in his productions. The French are really cultured. What surprised me the most was that they’re much more familiar with Taiwanese scholars and performers than the Taiwanese.

Minister Li also said that the arts is the most effective way for Taiwan to connect with the rest of the world. Alongside the awards ceremony, the Ministry of Culture also renewed the cooperation contract with the Academy of Moral and Political Sciences for a sixth round to continue promoting Taiwan-Europe cultural exchanges.

由台灣文化部與法國法蘭西人文院，共同設立的「臺法文化獎」，來到第28屆，今年獲獎者為法國知名影展創始人鐵胡萬，一生推動台灣電影，站上國際舞台，還有來自高雄的年輕編舞家蔡博丞，帶著團隊勇闖世界，深受歐洲觀眾喜愛！文化部長李遠也專程到法國主持頒獎，強調藝術是台灣通往世界的最小距離。

這裡是法國學術界的最高殿堂，法蘭西學會，超過兩百年歷史，而台灣與歐洲最重要的文藝盛事，台法文化獎。就在這裡盛大登場。

李遠強調，藝術是台灣通往世界最短的距離，也再次與法蘭西人文院，簽署續約協議，讓台歐藝文交流，持續發光發熱。

The site looks legit, the violation details check out, and before you know it, you’ve handed over your personal info to a scammer. So how do you tell the difference between a real government notice and a fake one? Here’s what to watch out for.

They copied our site to a tea. When you use the interface, it asks you to enter your personal data. If you do that, you just gave them your personal data. The money might not actually get sent over.

It’s practically identical to the real deal. But it could steal your personal information. So how can you tell them apart?

The one on the left is fake and the one on the right is real. The key isn’t the website itself, but the URL. A real government site will always end in gov.tw. There are also other ways to tell.

Watch out! This is a scam. Motor vehicle offices will never remind you to pay fines by email. If you ever receive an email related to fines, it is 100% a scam.

If you forget to pay a fine, we will send you a formal letter in the mail within three months after the deadline. If you receive this letter, you can take it to a convenience store or to a financial institute to pay by scanning the QR code.

Scam groups spare no effort to seem legitimate, and they cast the widest net they can in hopes of cheating people out of their hard-earned money. It’s best to be suspicious and see right through their tricks.

Paddleboarder gets things back after dropping bag in ocean

Is it possible to get your phone back if you drop it into the ocean? For one paddle boarder in Keelung’s Waimushan, it was. While paddling, the strap on his waist bag broke, dropping his phone and keys into the water. Even though he knew the chances were slim, he still posted online asking for help. Miraculously, another traveler spotted his things and he was able to get them back after only two days.

When Mr. Chen and his friend went stand-up paddleboarding in Keelung’s Waimushan, he never expected his bag to set off on a journey of its own. When he stopped looking, his waist bag leapt into the ocean.

Maybe when I wasn’t paying attention, since I was wearing a life vest, it was rubbing against it and the buckle broke. But yesterday, when people were out paddleboarding they saw it.

Fortunately, the water around Waimushan is clear and there were snorkelers who were willing to help. Chen’s wife also posted on social media. After only two days, another visitor miraculously found his long-lost bag, and Chen was reunited with his motorbike keys, house fob, watch, and phone.

Most people think that if you lose your things in the ocean, there’s no chance of getting them back. But now technology is pretty advanced. You can locate it.

It’s fortunate that Chen’s things were found within a safe distance and in a shallow area. If it had sunk down 30 meters, it would have been far more difficult to retrieve.

Some professional divers have searched for a lost phone before. But even when they dropped a flashlight and dove in immediately, they couldn’t get it. When they tried five years ago, it was like searching for a needle in a haystack, and they called it quits.

We couldn’t find it. It was so difficult. Really difficult. The deepest we went was 27 or 28 meters. About 27 meters. The longest we could stay under was 15 minutes total.

When diving, you have to be aware of how far you can swim, your sight line, and how long the oxygen will last. But when you’re concentrating on searching, it’s easy to forget about how much air is left. You need someone else to watch your back. Even if you can locate where a lost item is, without professional equipment, it’s better not to challenge the mighty ocean just to get a few things back.

Two-star Thai chef brings the spice to Taipei hotel restaurant

The head chef at a two-Michelin-star restaurant in Thailand is coming to Taiwan for the first time! Working with a five-star hotel in Taipei, the chef is offering a full menu of Thai specialties like the royal krathong thong, giant prawns, and slow-cooked beef rib in green curry. He started cooking when he was only 11, and has even served Lisa of Blackpink.

Giant prawns roast on an open grill, popping and sizzling as they’re brushed with lemongrass and Thai chili sauce. After removing them from the heat, the chef mixes a hardy tom yum sauce and adds lemon to pair with the tender prawns. With that, this lemon tom yum shrimp salad is ready to serve.

For this dish, the chef dices large chunk of beef rib that he drizzles with green curry before topping it off with basil. Cooked for three to five hours, the beef rib is melt-in-the-mouth tender. It’s known as their “crowning jewel” for a reason.

As a Michelin-starred restaurant, it certainly has the accolades, so I wanted to try it. He’s a very famous chef in Thailand. The dishes he’s serving here are comparatively more authentic. Maybe different from other Thai food you’d get.

It’s actually traditional Thai food. Although it appears to be more innovative, they’re still classic Thai flavors.

This renowned chef has been awarded two Michelin stars for six years running. Starting from when he was 11, he has now catered three APEC banquets and even served Lisa from Blackpink. Now on his first visit to Taiwan, he’s offering 16 different dishes at a five-star hotel in Taipei.

Minister of Sports inaugurated, two-time Olympic gold medalist sworn in as minister

The Ministry of Sports was inaugurated on Tuesday, which is also National Sports Day. Two-time Olympic gold medalist Lee Yang was sworn in as the very first sports minister, at only 30 years old. In his inauguration speech, Lee outlined six major policies for the new ministry, including promoting sports for all, on top of improving benefits and conditions for professional athletes.

The Ministry of Sports is inaugurated on this day, Sept. 9, which is also National Sports Day, marking a new milestone for the country.

At only 30 years old, Lee Yang has already won two gold medals for badminton men’s doubles at the Olympic Games. After announcing retirement, Lee became an associate professor at National Taiwan Sport University. Now he’s taken the helm at the newly-established Ministry of Sports. In his first official remarks, Lee said he pledges to promote “sports for all,” strengthen the development of competitive sports and promote the sports industry, among six major policy areas.

Lai highlights chip supply chain, honors industry leaders

One day ahead of Semicon Taiwan, President Lai Ching-te and top government officials opened the Semicon Network Summit, spotlighting Taiwan’s central role in the global semiconductor supply chain. The president presented economic medals to industry leaders, including TSMC executives and a former Japanese minister, to recognize their efforts in boosting Taiwan’s global tech presence. More than 28 representatives attended the event with calls for stronger international cooperation.

One day before Semicon Taiwan, President Lai Ching-te, Economics Minister Kung Ming-hsin and Science Minister Wu Cheng-wen spoke about global semiconductor supply chains at the Semicon Network Summit.

The distribution of work within the chip industry makes it so that no one country can do it all. The president presented several Professional Medals by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. One of them was collected by TSMC Co-COO Y.P. Chin on behalf of TSMC CEO C.C. Wei, who was recognized for his leadership in boosting the visibility of Taiwan’s semiconductor industry. Another recipient was former Japanese Economics Minister Akira Amari, a key facilitator for TSMC’s expansion to Kumamoto. The event was also attended by representatives from the UK, Belgium and Czechia.
