TSO Marks 50 Years with Premiere of Alishan-inspired concerto

2025-09-09

The Taipei Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 50th anniversary with new work by Europe-based Taiwanese composer Chang Shiuan. After six years working on the piece, it is finally set to make its world premiere in Taiwan. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

Inspired by the Taiwan red cypress trees of Alishan, the composition portrays the enduring vitality of the cypress forests in Taiwan. To tell the story of Alishan, Shiuan Chang and Korean violinist In Mo Yang visited Alishan, weaving the forest’s tranquility and sounds into the music.

Shiuan Chang
Composer
When I was composing this piece, I imagined us being in a forest, surrounded by countless sounds: the wind, the flowing stream, and the sounds of insects and birds. These sounds come from different channels, different directions, engaging us in a dialogue. The first movement represents a vast journey spanning millions of years, spanning through time and geography. The second movement reflects transitions within the cycle of life, moving between different stages of existence.

The Taipei Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a new work by Europe-based Taiwanese composer Shiuan Chang. The upcoming world premiere of the violin concerto “23.5°N, 121°E” will feature In Mo Yang as the soloist. Yang won the 2015 Paganini Violin Competition. The concert will be conducted by Nicholas Carter, an Australian conductor and incoming Music Director of the Stuttgart State Opera.

In Mo Yang
Violinist
This place is really marvelous. It is amazing what the forest can do to us. What kind of emotions they can evoke. There are a lot of elements of the piece that are connected to this place.

The concert will be held at the National Concert Hall on Sept. 13.
