The first steps are always the hardest, but however hard they may be, they cannot be harder than winning two Olympic gold medals.
At only 30 years old, Lee Yang has already won two gold medals for badminton men’s doubles at the Olympic Games. After announcing retirement, Lee became an associate professor at National Taiwan Sport University. Now he’s taken the helm at the newly-established Ministry of Sports. In his first official remarks, Lee said he pledges to promote “sports for all,” strengthen the development of competitive sports and promote the sports industry, among six major policy areas.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen so many members of the press. I hope that you’ll all spare me. I studied business in university, so I understand the importance of budgets. I believe that since every cent we have are taxpayers’ money, so we must spend on what matters most. For that, we will definitely pay special attention.
Many fellow Olympians were also at the ceremony to support the new minister.

We wish Minister Lee the best, and hope that he can help secure more benefits for our athletes and members of the public.
Olympic gold medalist boxer Lin Yu-ting even got a present to wish Lee Yang well: a small statue of a “little hero.” Meanwhile, Lee also said that on top of official duties, his goal is to continue exercising regularly, despite the busy schedule of an official.
