Stores sell out of disaster relief supplies as volunteers flock to Hualien

2025-10-01

After Typhoon Ragasa devastated Hualien’s Guangfu Township, thousands of people have been volunteering to help in the recovery effort. Disaster relief supplies, such as shovels and rain boots are sold out at many big box stores in Taipei. One store even set up a "superhuman equipment area" where volunteers can quickly find everything they need.

Equipped with shovels, waterproof boots and gloves, hats, and buckets, these volunteers are ready to help Hualien recover from the aftermath of Typhoon Ragasa. Thousands of people from around Taiwan have journeyed to Guangfu Township to help, but they need the right equipment first.

Buckets, gloves, fast-drying pants, and rain boots are all necessities. One supermarket even set up a “superhuman equipment area” so that volunteers can quickly find everything they need.

Member of public
Shovels are here, then boots are over there, so people run all over searching. Putting these things together should make it more convenient for people who want to go help.

Rain boots are already in short supply, with only shorter boots remaining. Stores are rushing to restock as quickly as possible.

Voice of Chang Chun-hung
Store spokesperson
Where are the rain jackets, where are the shovels? We put the necessary equipment together in one area so that volunteers can easily find what they want.

One customer bought all the large shovels, and all 30 pairs of rainboots that are normally on the top shelf have vanished. Stores are requesting new supplies nearly every day, and shipments are coming in two or three times more often than usual. They are doing their utmost to supply volunteers with everything they need.
