Woman gets stuck on escalator after skirt gets caught in gap

A woman in New Taipei learned the hard way what happens if you don’t pay attention while riding the escalator. Her skirt got caught in the gap of an escalator at Jiangzicui Station on Sunday evening, leaving her trapped. Fortunately, a fellow passenger pressed the emergency stop button and helped free her. Let’s hear more.

It’s kind of scary, you have to be careful. If your skirt gets caught in it, it will either get ripped off, or you’ll end up on the floor. If it happens while you’re riding it, it can cause a crash. It’s very dangerous.

There is signage reminding passengers to watch out for the gap, to avoid getting long skirts or foam shoes chewed up. Hold the handrail, stand firmly, don’t lean on the side panels, and pay attention to the escalator’s movement.

Of course this is not the first time that an incident like this happens on the Taipei MRT. Back during the National Day long weekend, a shoe jammed an escalator at Xinpu Station, sending four people crashing down. Among them was a 76-year-old woman who ended up with a broken bone. The Taipei Metro reminds passengers to be extra careful when wearing loose clothing or soft-soled shoes. Riders are reminded to look out for the gaps between steps, as they are magnets for entanglements.

北捷江子翠站，週日晚上七點多，有民眾直擊，一名女子的長裙，不慎捲入手扶梯，好險有熱心民眾，按下緊急停機鈕，並協助女子脫困。北捷也再次呼籲民眾，搭乘手扶梯，除了穿長裙要特別當心外，穿材質較軟的洞洞鞋，也一定要多加留意。

“有點可怕，要多注意點。捲進去之後，要不然整件裙子掉了，不然就是人跌倒了，然後跌倒之後如果在半途中，可能會撞到其他的人，就真的非常的危險。”

“搭手扶梯應該沒有預料到會有這種事情。應該會先請手扶梯出入口的人先幫忙按緊急停止(鈕)，然後可能再請站務人員來幫忙。”

“均有告示提醒旅客務必注意間隙，避免長裙或軟膠鞋夾入，請旅客緊握扶手，站穩踏階，勿倚靠側板，多留意扶梯行徑動態。”

異物捲入手扶梯，已經不是頭一回發生，國慶連假才有人穿洞洞鞋，在北捷新埔站搭乘手扶梯，鞋子遭捲入，造成一共四人慘摔，一名76歲婦人，手因此骨折。搭乘手扶梯除了穿長裙，一定要特別注意外，像是洞洞鞋、橡膠鞋，這種材質軟的鞋也要當心容易被捲入，特別留意手扶梯踏板間旁的縫隙，是容易捲入的死角。

Another alternative available for Nvidia’s office in Taipei

Earlier this year, tech giant Nvidia announced plans to establish a new Taiwan office at the Beitou Shilin Science Park. The company had originally eyed two plots of land, T17 and T18, for the project, but ran into problems regarding land use with the Taipei City Government and Shin Kong Life Insurance. Plan B included other options such as plot T12 and the Songnan military camp. But now, there is another alternative in the works, according to Taipei Deputy Mayor Lee Szu-chuan. Let’s hear from him.

There is a lot of privately owned land that has been offered to the city government for this project, included land belonging to Tatung Company. We will consolidate all the options and submit a plan to Nvidia before Friday. Until then, it’ll have to be confidential, but what I can say is that the site we’re looking at is bigger than plots T17 and T18 combined, and could come with lower fees.

The best backup is not necessarily about having a big space. What is important is whether it there is enough space nearby for Nvidia’s suppliers in the case that they also want to set up shop in Taipei. That’s why I think the Beitou Shilin Science Park is still the best option.

The Taipei City Government has to take a tough stance and tell Shin Kong Life Insurance that the city is taking back the land next year in accordance with the relevant contract. We have a backup plan, so Shin Kong could end up losing everything.

Lee says the T12 plot has been consolidated without problems, and all the privately owned subsections have been integrated. As for the Songnan military camp, the land is owned partially by the city, and partially by the Ministry of National Defense. If Nvidia is willing to take the space, the local and national government could provide the land as soon as the end of the year.

Kaohsiung police defend enforcement of traffic laws on pedestrian walkway

Families strolling along one particular parkway in Kaohsiung have noticed that scooters seem to be completely ignoring the traffic laws, and no one appears to be enforcing them. People in wheelchairs or using the path to exercise have raised alarm about the danger, but the problem has only gotten worse. The police said they have already issued 77 tickets there this year, and vowed to step up enforcement.

Even at night, this parkway is full of people. But lots of scooters cross it illegally anyway, angering pedestrians.

This is the “Tree Ocean Square” along the green boulevard in central Kaohsiung. Even when an FTV reporter visited, there were many drivers who ignored the signs and drove through. One pedestrian out for a walk was startled.

After the subway was put in, Kaohsiung built a lush green boulevard above it. The reason motorists drive through as a shortcut is because, if you follow the road, you have to drive all the way around.

Without taking the illegal shortcut, the drive would take two-and-a-half minutes. But with the shortcut, it’s only five seconds to get to the other side. Police said that this year alone, they’ve already issued 77 tickets to scooter drivers.

Violating traffic regulations is subject to a fine of between NT$600 and NT$1,800. We will continue to strengthen traffic enforcement and public awareness.

No one is afraid of the fines. It’s too lax. Logically speaking, they should increase the fine. The police should enforce it more.

Many residents use this green space for exercise and recreation, including children and older people in wheelchairs. The motorists might not be afraid of getting a ticket, but it certainly causes a headache for everyone else.

Drones becoming part of high school curriculums

With the advancement of technology, mastery of drones aren’t just a hobby, but a valued professional skill. The global drone market is expected to grow to US$50 billion by 2030. Former quarrying giant now recycles building materials

A former quarrying giant in Taiwan has now joined in net-zero efforts. Instead of excavating raw materials from the environment, they now run a circular model that recycle waste materials to be reused. This not only reduces waste, but also lowers carbon emissions.

Don’t underestimate these raw materials. If we recycle 10,000 tons a day, that’s 300,000 tons in a month, enough to make up for quarrying at riverbeds and reducing pollution.

The “raw materials” he’s referring to include recycled gravel, waste building materials and slag. What would’ve become a pollutant if disposed of is turned into recycled pellets. The building materials company owner and his son have built this circular model in an otherwise highly polluting industry.

We only realized when doing this recycling that for the past 23 years, we’ve been trying to lower carbon emissions. If circular economy contributes 40% to net-zero reduction efforts, we in quarrying only make up a miniscule part.

Together, the family-owned business has turned quarries into material recycling plants. They also collaborate with local communities to make products with their upcycled pellets, such as this dining table. Their efforts are in line with the Ministry of Environment’s Resource Circulation Promotion Act.

How to get everyone onboard with resource circulation? It’s letting everyone see its power. The quarrying industry is so niche, but we still managed to reduce 10kg of carbon emissions. If everyone can come together, one small step from us will send ripples outwards.

The company takes part in the Ministry of Environment’s resource circulation alliance joined by eight industries, to promote sustainable local brands and encourage businesses to take part in circular economy. Through government policy and legislation, the ministry is taking Taiwan closer toward its goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
