NTNU shopping area adds barriers to improve pedestrian safety

2025-10-20

To improve safety, the Taipei City Government has transformed the shopping area near NTNU into a pedestrian-friendly zone featuring raised roads and wider sidewalks on corners that make motorists drive slower. The city plans to implement similar changes across another 35 boroughs.

Vehicles drive through narrow alleys as people rush off to work or to the market. But how do you make an area that’s frequented by both pedestrians and vehicles safer? The Taipei City Government has a solution.

Resident
There wasn’t this rail here before, so we would always walk on the road and it was actually pretty dangerous. But now, I think it’s a lot safer this way.

Student
Before it was redone, I was a bit nervous to walk on the street. Maybe because it’s too small or the markings weren’t clear, I wasn’t sure where to walk. But now, it’s very clear that this is where you should walk.

This is Guzhuang Borough in Guting. The sidewalks were widened and set back at corners, colors brightened, and barriers set up to make the pedestrian areas clearer. The electricity boxes were also moved from the corners to areas that would not affect sightlines. To make motorists drive slower, speed bumps were installed and roads were raised.

Wu Tsung-hsiung
Guzhuang Borough chief
The current state of the roads makes cars drive nearly 40% slower. Scooters are also driving 48% slower. By making everyone go slower through here, it’s safer for pedestrians and motorists alike.

Small changes can make a big difference for pedestrians and reduce the number of traffic accidents as well. Soon, the city plans to roll out similar changes in other boroughs.
