Drones becoming part of high school curriculums

2025-10-20

With the advancement of technology, mastery of drones aren’t just a hobby, but a valued professional skill. The global drone market is expected to grow to US$50 billion by 2030. Their usage is gradually expanding to include surveillance, search and rescue and military applications. Now some schools have caught up with this trend and have launched drone courses, where children learn how to operate drones. Let’s hear more.

This is a football drone. Some people are responsible for defense, while others are responsible for attack and shooting goals, in a fierce aerial battle.

In another area, the propellers are rotating, and the drone’s fuselage lightly and deftly circumnavigates obstacles. The drone’s operator is not an adult, but a junior high student.

After joining the club, I discovered there’s so much to learn about drones. During weekends, when I have free time, I practice with some drone operators I know. I can get a learner’s license aged 14, and a professional license after I turn 18. My parents are very supportive of me trying this.

More and more schools in Taipei City are introducing these kinds of courses. For example, Taipei Municipal Liu Gong Junior High School has introduced compulsory drone courses for all students, ranging from operations to programming, because drones are becoming a future trend.

It can train their hand-eye coordination and reaction ability, providing them with new avenues for development, whether they are serving in the military or entering society.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang once pointed out that drones are expected to be mass-produced, and there will be more and more job opportunities. In the future, conscripts who have drone licenses will have preferential treatment.

Children nowadays are mostly playing with their phones, but as educators, we’re afraid of children constantly being immersed in them. I wanted to create something that would give them the feeling of playing mobile games or video games, but with a more educational element. Then, you will find that drones can be programmed and designed and have applications in many other areas.

The idea is for drone technology to take root in schools, but funding is also a big challenge. After all, drone prices range from a few thousand to tens of thousands of NTD. Fortunately, there can be supportive parents, meaning that their children’s future careers will be able to fly high.
