ITRI think tank’s annual forum spotlights quantum technology

ITRI is holding its heavyweight annual conference on industry trends. Quantum technology takes the spotlight this year, with quantum physics celebrating its 100th year as well as recent breakthroughs in quantum technology in. A series of events are held on the weekdays of Oct. 28 to Nov. 7, and ITRI’s think tank on industry trends also released its highly anticipated annual report on the day of the opening.

ITRI is holding its annual conference on industry trends, with presentations given by experts on quantum technology from home and abroad. The opening ceremony is attended by representatives from various European countries, including France, the UK and the Nentherlands.

Allow me to tell you all that this is only my second working day as ITRI President, but I’m already asked to give remarks. I believe that in the future, the two fields of quantum computing and quantum communication will bring forth great changes.

The “IEK Topics 2025” report was also released on this day, focusing on quantum technology, coinciding with the centennial of quantum physics. It includes a Hon Hai case study on trapped-ion quantum computing, recently published on the prestigious journal “Nature Physics.” Nobel physics laureate, Alain Aspect also gave remarks via teleconference on the key aspects of harnessing the potential of quantum tech.

Many financial service companies in other countries have already adopted quantum computers and quantum computing to help them predict future investment directions. Moderna also uses quantum computing to assist in pharmaceutical R&D. This allows them to greatly shorten the time needed to develop a new drug, from more than a decade to two to three years.

I think Taiwan could play a very important role in that by developing its own program and looking at the applications that would help companies in Taiwan, or cooperating with Taiwan.

Quantum mechanical phenomena allow quantum computers to be 10 million times faster than traditional computers. The global quantum industry is projected to be worth more than NT$2.9 trillion in 2030. Already, industries across semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and fintech are demonstrating the potential of quantum computing, and Taiwan stands a chance to be a key player, building on its leading role in AI.

工研院論壇 談金融.生醫.半導體量子科技應用

工研院10月28日至31日及11月3日至7日舉辦「眺望2026產業發展趨勢研討會」,適逢量子力學誕生一百周年,以「AI躍飛・量子啟航」為主軸,活動同步發表《無限量:量子百年創新紀元》專刊,更邀請曾訪台的諾貝爾物理學獎得主阿蘭‧阿斯佩為量子革命在書中發表看法,未來在金融、生醫和半導體等都能看見應用。

工研院2026產業發展趨勢研討會上,國內外量子科技領域專家排排站,法國、英國和荷蘭在台辦事處代表都出席,新任工研院院長張培仁,看台灣量子科技前景,信心滿滿。

這一次活動特別發表《無限量:量子百年創新紀元》專刊,內容還包含鴻海研究院剛發上國際頂尖期刊Nature Physics的離子阱量子電腦研究。開幕儀式更特別和諾貝爾物理學獎得主阿蘭阿斯佩遠端連線,如何把最新的量子科技導入業界應用是關鍵。

量子科技利用原子、電子極微小粒子的特性,運算速度比傳統電腦快千萬倍,全球量子產業規模將在2030年衝破2.9兆新台幣,半導體、生醫製藥和金融科技未來都能看到,台灣成為AI中心也成為量子時代的關鍵推手。
