Pressing social issues in focus at Judicial Film Festival

The Judicial Film Festival is an event that delves into pressing legal and social issues. This year’s film lineup explores themes such as migrant workers, long-term care, restorative justice, and more. FTV reporter Stephany Yang has the details.

This year’s festival features six selected films that explore key contemporary judicial issues. Among them is “Me and My Condemned Father” by Taiwanese director Lee Chia-hua, which examines the death penalty from the perspective of a family member of the condemned. The lineup also includes stories about the reintegration struggles of formerly incarcerated individuals and the struggles faced by migrant caregivers.

Actually, that recent movie about migrant workers reflects topics that are commonly present in our society. Since Taiwan has already entered an aging society, I believe many families rely heavily on migrant workers. The issues of long-term care and migrant workers are deeply intertwined, and together they reveal the most authentic side of our society.

From an ethnic perspective, every culture carries its own meaning. This time, I played a Hakka village girl. While at first glance the broader picture may seem similar, when you delve into their cultural heritage, it’s actually quite different from that of the Indigenous peoples. I believe that through acting, we can gain a deeper understanding of the cultural significance of different ethnic groups and discover each other’s beauty.

The Judicial Film Festival, also known as the Golden Horse Judicial Film Festival, has been held for seven consecutive years. This annual event seeks to enhance public understanding of legal literacy and social awareness by showcasing films that address diverse societal issues, followed by post-screening discussions and forums.

The Judicial Yuan does not provide us with any guidance or restrictions when it comes to film selection, so we have complete freedom in choosing the works. Our film festival team watches a large number of films, hoping that through the Judicial Film Festival, we’re not just showcasing one type of movie, but rather a diverse range, both in style and in the issues.

Law is often perceived by the general public as cold and impersonal. The text and court judgments are also perceived the same way. Typically, a court ruling presents the outcome of an incident. However, before that incident occurs, there are many underlying causes and many life stories that lead to these events, which then result in a court judgment. Therefore, through films, we can gain deeper insight into the judgments or the law itself, and the issues that may lie behind them.

The 2025 Judicial Film Festival will run till Nov. 30 in Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung.

由司法院與金馬影展合作舉辦的司法影展，深入探討重要法律與社會議題。今年涵蓋移工、長期照護、修復式司法等主題。

今年的影展精選六部探討當代司法關鍵議題的影片，包括台灣導演李家驊的《我的爸爸是死刑犯》，從死刑犯家屬的角度探討死刑問題。其他電影則反映更生人重返社會的掙扎，以及移工所面臨的困境。

“其實剛剛那部移工的電影，特別是電影所觸及的議題，是我們社會上普遍存在的議題，特別是因為台灣已經進入老年化的社會，所以我相信很多家庭都有很多移工、長照的議題，移工的議題其實交織在一起，也是呈現出我們社會最真實的一面。"

"如果以族群的角度來看，其實每一個文化都有他們的意義在，我這一次演到客家庄的女孩，確實好像你看到大區塊是一樣的，可是你實際上去探討他們的文化傳承，還是跟原住民有很大的不同。我覺得透過演戲，可以知道更多種族他們的文化的意義，跟他們美麗的地方是在那。"

司法影又稱金馬X司法影展，每年舉辦一次，已連續舉辦七年，希望透過放映探討多元社會議題的影片，並舉辦映後討論及論壇，提升公眾對法律素養及社會的認知。

“司法院並不會給我們任何在選片的指導或限制，所以我們會有百分之百的自由去挑選這些作品。我們影展的同仁就會大量的看片，希望透過司法影展不是介紹一種類型的電影，是非常多元議題的多元。"

"法律，一般人都認為說是比較冷冰冰的文字，判決書也是如此，通常法院的判決是呈現一件事情的最後的結果，但是其實在這個事情的發生的前面，是有很多的原因的，有很多的人生的故事才會產生這些事情，然後才會有法院的判決，因此透過電影能夠更深入的去了解判決或法律背後，它背後所可能產生，存在的問題。"

2025司法影展將於於台北、台中、高雄三地舉行至11月30日。

Pingtung farmer develops small luxury ‘macaron’ watermelon

Have you ever wanted to eat a watermelon, but gotten frustrated that it was too large? Now there’s a kind just for you, perfect as a single serving. Called the “macaron” watermelon, it’s only about as big as your hand, but just as sweet and refreshing as any other. Some people are even calling it the Louis Vuitton of watermelons. Using an organic screenhouse, a farmer in Pingtung County’s Jiuru Township succeeded on his very first try growing the new varietal. They’re already available for purchase at the Jiuru Farmers’ Association market.

Dark green fruits droop from the vines inside this screenhouse. They’re what some are calling the “Louis Vuitton” of watermelons: the macaron watermelon.

Since this is the first time I’m trying to grow them, if they can fruit, I’ll let them fruit.

With a dark green and smoothly rounded exterior, the creator named this stylish fruit after the French dessert, the macaron. The fruit inside is bright red and tastes just like its larger counterpart.

Although it’s small, the fruit still has that sandy texture. It’s pretty good, and sweet enough.

Chen Yun-chuan used to be a computer engineer, but when his father-in-law needed care, he took over his wife’s family farm. They mostly grow candied dates and green bitter melon, but during the fallow period, he tried growing these small watermelons. After heavy rains in July and August, the seedlings were not growing well. But after some attentive care, they successfully fruited, and he’s already had four harvests.

It took a lot of work. They said precision agriculture is labor-intensive. Since it grows on the vine, it takes a lot of managing.

Screenhouses aren’t a greenhouse, so it’s a lot cheaper. It’s also a summer crop, and can handle the heat.

Although this tiny watermelon is currently four times the cost of the larger ones, it’s still captured the attention of customers who have been buying them up, excited to try.

Students teach older adults AI skills, to create videos about their lives

As AI gains popularity, students from Yunlin County’s Yang-Tze High School recently taught AI skills to 20 older adults in their community. This has enabled these older adults to create videos about their lives. One of them, 66-year-old, Hong Yung-yu, is suffering from the effects of a bout of polio in his childhood and uses crutches to walk. With the help of AI, he finally got to see himself dancing on stage in an international dance contest. Hong was terribly moved, saying it was something he didn’t even dare to dream of.

A man steps onto the stage of an international talent show, radiating energy and performing superb dance moves. This causes the judges on the stage one after another to make exclamations of admiration.

Although he knew the video was generated by AI, Hong Yung-yu still can’t stop laughing. As a child he contracted polio and now he has to rely on crutches and other supportive devices to walk. It had been his lifelong dream to stand on a stage and dance freely.

I’ve never taken a PE class in my life, and I’m clumsy on my feet. When I saw the video, I felt the image was something I’d been really yearning for. This feeling is really something that I’d previously never dare to imagine. Of course this had been my lifelong dream. At least this image was created in a video and I feel very consoled by this.

Students from Yang-Tze High School in Yunlin’s Huwei Township went to nearby Yinchuan community and provided older adults one-on-one hands-on learning, with each student paired up with an older member of the community. Twenty older adults then went from rejecting technology to immersing themselves in creation.

Some older adults made videos of themselves rapping in English or dancing with K-Pop dance troupes. Some even walked with tigers.

AI is a trend right now. Even in our more rural areas, nearly everyone seems to have heard of it but hasn’t had the opportunity to put it in use. Of course, when these students came looking for this, it was exactly what I was after. I readily agreed.

Starting from scratch, these older adults are learning about creating using technology. This activity did not only help to bridge a generational gap, but through AI they were able to tell stories that they never thought they could.

ITRI think tank’s annual forum spotlights quantum technology

ITRI is holding its heavyweight annual conference on industry trends. Quantum technology takes the spotlight this year, with quantum physics celebrating its 100th year as well as recent breakthroughs in quantum technology in. A series of events are held on the weekdays of Oct. 28 to Nov. 7, and ITRI’s think tank on industry trends also released its highly anticipated annual report on the day of the opening.

ITRI is holding its annual conference on industry trends, with presentations given by experts on quantum technology from home and abroad. The opening ceremony is attended by representatives from various European countries, including France, the UK and the Nentherlands.

Allow me to tell you all that this is only my second working day as ITRI President, but I’m already asked to give remarks. I believe that in the future, the two fields of quantum computing and quantum communication will bring forth great changes.

The “IEK Topics 2025” report was also released on this day, focusing on quantum technology, coinciding with the centennial of quantum physics. It includes a Hon Hai case study on trapped-ion quantum computing, recently published on the prestigious journal “Nature Physics.” Nobel physics laureate, Alain Aspect also gave remarks via teleconference on the key aspects of harnessing the potential of quantum tech.

Many financial service companies in other countries have already adopted quantum computers and quantum computing to help them predict future investment directions. Moderna also uses quantum computing to assist in pharmaceutical R&D. This allows them to greatly shorten the time needed to develop a new drug, from more than a decade to two to three years.

I think Taiwan could play a very important role in that by developing its own program and looking at the applications that would help companies in Taiwan, or cooperating with Taiwan.

Quantum mechanical phenomena allow quantum computers to be 10 million times faster than traditional computers. The global quantum industry is projected to be worth more than NT$2.9 trillion in 2030. Already, industries across semiconductors, pharmaceuticals and fintech are demonstrating the potential of quantum computing, and Taiwan stands a chance to be a key player, building on its leading role in AI.

Famous eateries in Tainan shutter due to ASF measures

Food stalls and eateries specializing in pork dishes are closing all around Taiwan, due to the tough measures put in place to contain a suspected outbreak of African swine fever. In Tainan, many famous joints have already shuttered up, and the few that remain are relying on dwindling stock. Tourists visiting the food capital of Taiwan say they are disappointed to not have the chance to try the city’s famous eats.

A ladle of minced pork and a whole prawn goes right in the rice batter to create a classic Tainan bite. But these ba-wan from Mao Xiong Shrimp Meatball could soon sell out due to African swine fever.
