A landlady in Hsinchu had to spend a small fortune to clean up more than 200 bags of trash from her rental unit. Ms. Hsu’s tenants had not paid rent for months, and had filled the entire home with waste, which made it impossible to open doors and even get around the house. They also ruined the furniture, and stopped replying to her messages. After dishing out more than NT$200,000 in cleaning and waste management fees, Ms. Hsu says she’s going to take the matter to court.

Trash piles up high, covering the floor and making it impossible to move around. It isn’t any better upstairs. You’d think this house is a ruin.

You have no choice but to step all over the rubbish. You can’t even open the doors to some rooms, or you can only open them halfway because there’s a pile of trash on the other side. Some of the cabinets were completely destroyed. The doors were pulled off the hinges and the shelves were strewn all over.

The tenants that trashed the house and furniture also owed four months of rent and utility bills. Whenever Ms. Hsu asked for the payment, they played the victim card, saying that they were poor and life was hard. In the end, the tenants ghosted her and disappeared, so Ms. Hsu had them move out.

They haven’t paid me for two months already. It’s the end of December now, so it’ll be three months in January. And even then, the previous three months they paid me only NT$1,500. The husband and wife both work, so it’s not just one person earning money.

Ms. Hsu had to spend more than NT$200,000 to clean up the place, and now hopes to get back four months of unpaid rent totaling NT$34,000 plus more than NT$70,000 in waste removal fees, while she’ll pay for the rest. But with no answers from her ex-tenants, she’s now looking to take legal action.

新竹一位房東遇上租客蟑螂，不但積欠房租，租屋處簡直比廢墟還慘，滿地垃圾、寸步難行，不少家具也壞了。房東找人清出至少兩百包的垃圾，花了20多萬善後。現在她除了將對方的惡行PO網，也決定訴諸法律討公道。

房內堆滿各式各樣垃圾，量多到寸步難行的地步，到樓上也好不到哪去，不說還以為這裡是廢墟。

“踩著垃圾進去裡面去，然後甚至有些地方門根本打不開，就是他門打開來只能開一半，因為後面滿滿都是垃圾卡住。包含我裡面有一些櫃子，整個也都被他毀掉了，那櫃子毀掉就是，整個門就被他拔下來以外，他裡面的那個木條，全部也都是散落的。”

倒楣的新竹房東，不但房子看起來像被炸過，家具壞光光，更慘的是，租客欠她四個房租、水電費，每次催討就裝可憐，哭窮說，自己日子也很難過，最後還搞失蹤，LINE不讀不回，房東只好要求他們搬走。

“你們已經兩個月沒有給我了，現在就十二月底了，一月就三個月，而且前面這三個月之前，你們也三個月才給我一千五，你們兩夫妻有上班，不是只有一個人賺錢。”

房東花了20多萬整理，只希望對方能把欠的四個月房租3萬4 ，和垃圾清運費共七萬多元還給她，剩下的她自己吸收，若對方繼續不理，只好訴諸法律，討回公道。

Young comic artist one step closer to professional dream after winning award

Luodong High School sophomore Chiang Yi-cheng recently won individual gold at the Ministry of Culture’s inaugural Youth Comic Awards for his four-panel comic. He said he started drawing in sixth grade, and lacked self-confidence all the way through middle school. Now that he’s won the award, he can say proudly that his dream is to become a comic artist.

With its characters rendered in gentle lines alongside concise, yet incisive text, this four-panel comic won the individual gold in this year’s inaugural Ministry of Culture Youth Comic Awards. The artist is Chiang Yi-cheng, a sophomore at Luodong High School in Yilan. He said he used to lack self-confidence, but drawing has helped him find himself.

I saw the flyer for it on a lectern. And the top prizes were really good, so I decided to enter. Plus the theme was open-ended.

Chiang has loved to draw since he was little. He first encountered anime in third grade and loved to read manga with his dad, developing a love for comics over time. He started learning how to draw in sixth grade, and hasn’t looked back since. Now that his passion for comics and determination have earned him a gold medal, he can finally confidently say that he wants to become a professional comic artist.

Originally, I thought even getting an honorable mention would be impressive, since it’s a national competition and lots of people entered. He also said that just getting any acknowledgment would be affirming.

I want to be a comic artist. Coming from a high-school student—especially one who’s never been acknowledged before—it sounds like a fairy tale when I say it out loud. But getting this award shows me that people get my work and it can be appreciated by others. So now I have the confidence to say that my dream is to be a comic artist.

The judges said that Chiang’s work has a point and tells a complete story, capable of the exceedingly difficult task of moving the reader to tears. Chiang also expressed gratitude to his teachers for their guidance and teaching, which have enabled him to win this award.

Night market stall provides straw pole to put used skewers

Yunlin’s Dongnan Night Market has a brand-new attraction! A vendor noticed that people were hurting themselves after stepping on discarded skewers, so he came up with the idea to make a “home” for them out of straw and wood. After visitors are finished eating, they can stick the used skewer into the pole. Ever since setting it up, far fewer skewers have been left on the ground.

Many night market favorites, from grilled corn to sweet potato balls, are eaten with bamboo skewers. But when they’ve served their purpose, they’re often left on the ground. Now there’s a “home for skewers” — a straw pole where visitors can put their skewers when they’re finished eating.

It’s not bad. There are fewer skewers on the ground, so you’re less likely to get poked when wearing sandals. I’ve been to many night markets, and it’s my first time seeing this.

Visitors love it. One person even came from another county just to see the post here at Dongnan Night Market in Yunlin. The person who came up with the idea sells pot stickers at the night market. After seeing lots of people drop their skewers on the ground, littering as well as endangering others, he was inspired to create this post made out of straw and sticks.

The pole has attracted some attention online, with some people suggesting that Liu change it to look like a scarecrow that people can skewer. Liu said he’ll consider it, and come up with more ways to make visitors’ night market trips more fun.

Charity gives free massages to people in vegetative state

A charitable foundation in Taitung has been caring for people in a vegetative state. They had been bedridden for years and lacked sufficient sensory and physical stimulation. When a local massage clinic owner heard about this, he brought in his employees and gave them free massages. The owner, who has been running his business for over 20 years, said he wanted to give back to the community through this act of kindness. Let’s find out more.

PLA launches live-fire drills simulating Taiwan blockade

The PLA on early Monday morning made a shock announcement of live-fire drills simulating a Taiwan blockade, to be held fully starting Tuesday. By Monday afternoon, the defense ministry had responded by coordinating a response command center, as numerous Chinese aircrafts made its way into Taiwan’s ADIZ. At the same time, the Presidential Office also issued a statement, urging China to exercise self-restraint and not to sabotage regional peace.

The PLA’s aircraft received a warning as it crosses Taiwan’s ADIZ. But it wouldn’t budge. At 7:30 a.m. Monday morning, the PLA made a shock announcement of live-fire drills around Taiwan.

The drills to enhance joint combat capabilities have begun on Dec. 29. This is a stern warning against “Taiwan independence” separatist forces and external meddlers. It is a legitimate and necessary action to uphold national integrity.

Codenamed “Justice Mission 2025,” the exercises are being held all across the Taiwan Strait, and within Taiwan’s territorial waters of the north, southwest, southeast and east. In other words, a simulation of a blockade. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Defense immediately responded by coordinating a response command center. The public-facing announcement on Facebook was accompanied with a video clip.

The Cost Guard also released a video in which a Chinese Cost Guard vessel was urged to leave.

Lawmakers of the ruling party are urging national unity in this latest crisis, beginning with the military special budget to demonstrate the country’s will of self-defense.
