CWA official’s messy hair and crooked tie endear netizens

The magnitude-7 earthquake last Saturday night jolted awake many people all over Taiwan, including an official at the Central Weather Administration’s Seismological Center. Chen Da-yi showed up at a press conference just minutes after the quake, looking professional as can be. But sharp-eyed netizens were amused to note his crooked tie and stray hairs, which betrayed the fact that he had to rush out of his house to go right on TV. Let’s hear from him.

I was asleep at the time. I live in New Taipei, so I felt the shaking and I heard the presidential alert. So I got out of bed and got dressed. I’m not great at tying ties, so I just grabbed one that was still done and put it on. I didn’t have time to check myself in the mirror.

Even though the tie wasn’t on perfectly, it didn’t detract from his presence and how honest and approachable his is. He’s got a charming smile too. I’m thinking that perhaps next time I’ll copy him and leave my tie all crooked.
Chen is known for his agreeable smile while delivering information on Taiwan’s seismic activity. He holds a PhD from NTU’s Department of Geosciences and started working at the Central Weather Administration in 2005. His main duties include processing earthquake data and working on the early warning system. Chen thanked the public for his recent viral fame. He also took the opportunity to thank his colleagues, who had to rush to the center and stayed up until past 2 a.m. to gather information about the quake.

27日深夜發生7.0強震，氣象署不到一小時火速開記者會，由地震中心科長陳達毅說明，讓民眾安心，他在鏡頭前「領帶歪斜、頭髮凌亂」，感覺是從床上跳起來，來不急整理就上電視，讓他立刻在網路社群爆紅，網友大讚專業、盡責。

“當下是我在睡覺，我家住新北市，我有感覺到劇烈搖晃，然後聽到國家警報的聲音，我就已經爬起來穿衣服了，其實我不太會打領帶，那個領帶是之前打好的，然後我只是套上去，沒有時間照鏡子”

“雖然領帶沒有打好，不過是瑕不掩瑜，你看他很真誠，講話很誠懇，很親民，那個笑容很可愛，我現在要考慮，是不是下次要學他，領帶也打歪歪”
帶著微笑說明地震資訊，陳達毅是台大地質系博士，2005年進氣象署工作，負責處理地震資料、發展預警系統，針對這次在社群爆紅，陳達毅感謝大家的支持，也強調氣象署同仁們都很稱職，許多人都趕回來忙到凌晨2點多才離開。
