Reckless riders lift scooter onto seesaw at playground

Imagine going to the park with your kids and seeing a scooter zipping through the playground equipment. Though it may seem farfetched, that’s exactly the scene that took place at a popular park in Miaoli. Two minors drove their electric scooters into the premises and wreaked havoc at the play place. They did wheelies on the padded areas, and even loaded a scooter onto a seesaw. Locals say their actions are extremely inconsiderate, as the place is meant for kids. They are facing fines of NT$6,000, and potentially even a jail sentence if they caused damage to public property.

A scooter zips by, gradually lifting its front wheel to perform a spectacular wheelie.

But hang on. This is a kid’s playground! And as if riding a scooter in the play place weren’t enough, the reckless rider rolled it onto the equipment!

One person stands on one side of the seesaw, while the other pushes down with the scooter on the other side, happily bobbing up and down. Surely the weight can’t be good for the equipment, which is designed for kids, not vehicles. A local posted a video of the intrusion online, sarcastically remarking it must have been a pressure test.

Police tracked down the riders. They were both minors and are facing fines of up to NT$6,000, and if damage was caused, the maximum penalty could be up to five years in prison.

傻眼! 苗栗2年輕人闖公園"翹孤輪" 機車抬上翹翹板

真的是蠻誇張的！苗栗市貓裡喵公園，是親子遊樂景點。卻有民眾拍到有2名年輕人，不但違規騎乘電動機車進入，還在公園裡"翹孤輪"，甚至把機車抬上翹翹板玩樂，行徑相當離譜。

電動機車前輪翹起，一路推進，騎士表演"翹孤輪"，往前開去。

不過看看這裡，可是公園耶！接著看下去，騎士不但違規騎車進公園，甚至把機車騎上遊樂器具！

兩名年輕人各自佔據遊具兩端，一個站著，一個騎機車重壓，一上一下地像用機車玩起翹翹板，這可是給小朋友玩的遊樂器具，機車這樣壓，恐怕有毀損疑慮。民眾拍下畫面PO網笑稱，從來不知道遊樂器具要做機車壓力測試。

警方以車追人，兩個都是未成年。除了可依公園管理自治條例，處6000元以下罰鍰，如果造成毀損，警方還可依刑法送辦，最重可處五年以下有期徒刑。

Shop sells ingot-shaped jerky for Lunar New Year

To meet Lunar New Year holiday demand, a jerky shop with a history of more than 30 years hired 10 extra staff working in shifts, allowing the shop to handle orders without rest. In addition to regular jerky, the shop is selling an ingot-shaped jerky that has been very popular for its unique design and flavor.

Each strip of this jerky is expertly marinated in soy sauce and honey. This ingot-shaped piece is a little spicy and seasoned with pepper.

After being pickled and dried, the jerky is cut into strips by a machine.

With practiced hands, staff then line up the jerky and put it through an oven at over 200 degrees, giving it a rich, roasted flavor.

The meat is all pork from the hind legs because the hind leg has less connective tissue, so it holds its shape better when roasted.

This special Lunar New Year jerky, shaped like a gold ingot, is moister. The oven conveyer belt is slowed down so that the jerky is roasted slowly, locking in the juices. It’s ready when it sizzles and the fat dances on the surface.

The temperature and speed for roasting the jerky depends on its thickness and shape, as well as its moisture level. Or, for example, the temperature that day also has an impact.

After it’s roasted, the jerky cools off in front of a fan. There are lots of orders for the Lunar New Year, but the jerky can’t be packaged and sent until it cools down.

The cost for handling sales increased by about 20 times compared with normal. In terms of staffing, we hire some part-time staff to help, adding around a dozen more people.

The price of pork itself has risen by about NT$10 per kg leading up to the Lunar New Year. But thankfully, this jerky business signed a long-term contract with a butcher, reducing the impact of inflation and rising prices.

Middle schooler holds traffic to help disabled man cross road

A video surfaced online recently of a middle schooler with a bike blocking traffic to help a man with mobility issues cross the street. People were moved by the gesture and tracked down the student. Turns out the kind teen is Chiang Yung-en, in his third year at Fongshan Junior High. He told reporters he turned back to help because he was worried about the man’s safety, and thanked the vehicles for waiting.

It seemed like he was missing a leg. He used his hand instead to slide on the ground. There was only a dozen or so seconds before the light turned green on the other side, so I was worried he’d get hit.

The kind student was Chiang Yung-en, in his third year at Fongshan Junior High. He told reporters he had just gotten off of school in the afternoon and went to rent a bike with some classmates. As he was riding, he saw the man slowly making his way across the road and decided to go back to help.

As I was helping him, he asked if I’d had lunch yet. I told him I hadn’t, and he said don’t worry about me, go get lunch first. I still waited for him to cross and then left.

This student is always very kind around school and very adorable. All his peers really enjoy spending time with him.

When the school heard about the video, they publicly commended him and gave him a certificate of merit in recognition of his kindness.

Although his community offered to help him out, the man prefers getting around this way, using his hand to support himself. It’s a good thing there are students like this one around to add a little more kindness to the neighborhood.

ITRI breaks ground on NT$3.77B advanced chip R&D base

Another summit rises among the Silicon Mountains for national defense. On Tuesday, the Industrial Technology Research Institute broke ground on a NT$3.77 billion 12-inch advanced chip R&D base at its headquarters in Hsinchu. The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. The ceremony was attended by Premier Cho Jun-tai, who emphasized the importance of the president’s second energy transition policy plan for Taiwan’s advanced industries.

In order to implement President Lai’s second energy transition, we must continue to develop diverse sources of green energy, smart energy saving systems and smart energy storage systems. The project is scheduled for completion next year, and begins operations in 2028. It will carry out three missions, including innovation trial production and verification for integrated circuit design and development of advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes. Hundreds get cleaning to get temples spick-and-span

The Lunar New Year is right around the corner, and many households in Taiwan are doing their annual spring cleaning to start off the Year of the Horse right. And it’s not just regular households. Temples are getting a wipe-down too. Over in Taichung, hundreds of volunteers and staff gathered at Lecheng Temple to clean every nook and cranny, from wiping floors and walls to dusting every single god figurine. Over at Tiangong Temple, the operation was even more intense, as there is a 21.5m tall statue to clean.

Staff are busy at the altar, wiping down the god’s faces. At the side, they use brushes to delicately sweep the dust off.

This is the Lecheng Temple near Taichung’s Han River, which honors Mazu. Hundreds of volunteers have come to give the deities inside a bath to be spick-and-span before the Lunar New Year.

We go one by one, dusting them with a soft brush to get the dust off. Then we clean the floor and give everything a wipe before putting the statue back.

We mobilized more than 400 temple volunteers to help out with the cleaning operation.

A thorough clean was also underway at the Tiangong Temple in Longjing District, where washing the 21.5m statue of the Jade emperor was the key challenge. Staff had to set up ladders and balance over the statue to wipe it with towels properly, both front and back.

Traditionally this is done on the 20th day of the 12th lunar month. This year, that landed on a holiday, so the head of our committee asked the Jade Emperor to see if we could do it a day earlier. We cast divination blocks three times and he agreed.

A team of 50 cleaners went all out at Tiangong temple. Some handled the high-altitude tasks, while other cleaned pillars, blessing lamps, the floor and the offering tables. Everything has to be spotless for a fresh new start this coming holiday season.

Hongkonger and Taiwanese protest against Jimmy’s Lai’s 20-year-sentence

Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai was sentenced to 20 years under Hong Kong’s new national security laws, which critics said amounted to life imprisonment. On Tuesday, Hongkongers in Taiwan and Taiwanese activists gathered outside the Legislative Yuan in protest. They said Lai’s case should alarm Taiwan, as it’s Beijing’s way of silencing and warning its critics. Minister of the Mainland Affairs Council, Chiu Chui-cheng also condemned the decision, and said it’s proof that China’s “one country, two systems” arrangement for its special administrative regions are now in name only, and that Hong Kong judiciary has become a tool for political persecution.

Civic groups and academics have banded outside the Legislative Yuan, to protest against the 20-year sentence for Apple Daily founder Jimmy Lai, on charges of Hong Kong’s new national security law.
