Maintaining status quo is good for Taiwan: AIT director

AIT Director Sandra Oudkirk says that maintaining the status quo of the Taiwan Strait is good for Taiwan and for the world. During an online talk show last Sunday, Oudkirk was asked if Washington might reestablish formal ties with Taiwan. She responded that, quote, there’s a lot of good in the status quo. Let’s hear from her.

The United States has a longstanding “one China” policy. Its foundation is what we call the status quo, which is the current situation, which is an ambiguous situation for Taiwan, but it’s a situation that has enabled decades of positive economic growth, improvement in people’s standard of living, and ability for Taiwan to become a world-leading tech powerhouse. So there’s a lot of good in the status quo. … Taiwan needs to show that it can defend itself, and I think that Taiwan is really working toward that aim. Taiwan has a professional, well-resourced, well supported military that does a very good job of operating complex systems. The same systems that in many cases that are in the U.S. arsenal.
Commenting on cross-strait tensions, Oudkirk said the U.S. was committed to helping Taiwan defend itself. She said that, quote, the first responsibility for defense is self-defense, and that Taiwan has shown its commitment toward that goal.
The show’s host said there were critics who question Washington’s reliability in times of war. Oudkirk replied that skepticism is the sign of a strong democracy, and that people should ask questions about AIT and U.S. policies. But she said that when misinformation is spread as news, the AIT will seek to correct the record.

美國在臺協會台北辦事處長孫曉雅接受專訪，被問不少民眾期待台美建交，她強調"維持現狀"，對台灣甚至全世界都是更好的選擇。對兩岸緊張，孫曉雅說，自我防衛是國防最重要的一步，台灣正朝這目標前進。

“美國長期以來遵循一中政策，這個政策的基礎是所謂的現狀，也就是目前的情況。對台灣來說是一個模糊的情況，但也因為這個情況讓台灣實現數十年的經濟正成長，提升人們的生活水準，使台灣有能力成為世界一流的科技強權，所以現狀對台灣有好處。台灣必須展現有能力保護自己，我想台灣確實朝此目標前進。台灣有一支專業、資源豐富、支持充足的軍隊，他們在操作複雜系統方面表現出色，許多時候他們操作的系統跟美國是相同的。”
對於美軍撤出阿富汗、以及俄烏戰爭開打，有些人質疑美國在兩岸開戰時，不會協防台灣，孫曉雅強調，他們不會試著去改變別人的意見，並且鼓勵大家，如果對AIT政策或美國政策有疑問，就去問。但如果有人把錯誤訊息當新聞傳播，他們會試著更正。
