Taiwan clinches gold in men’s 3x3 basketball at Asian Games

Taiwan scored a surprise gold last Sunday in the men’s 3x3 basketball event. Team Taiwan had a rough start in the gold medal game against Qatar, trailing by seven points at one point. But the squad staged a thrilling comeback, edging their rivals 18-16. The win marked Taiwan’s ninth gold at this year’s Asian Games.

Four men stand tall on the podium, as Taiwan’s Olympic flag rises over the men’s 3x3 basketball arena. Lin Sin-kuan, Chiang Chun, Wang Jhe-yu and Yu Xiang-ping have made history in Taiwan basketball. But their victory didn’t come easy.

In the final against Qatar, the opposing team got off to a fast start, building a 1-8 lead. But Team Taiwan turned the tide with a powerful counterattack.

A 3-point play by Lin, made at a 45-degree angle, marked the beginning of Taiwan’s comeback. The team plowed its way from 9-4 to just two points behind their rivals. The turning point came when Qatar made a string of seven errors, repeatedly traveling and violating the 3-second rule. The crucial error came 34 seconds before the end, resulting in a change in possession that gave Chiang the ball. He took the chance to even the score.

With the teams tied 16-16, Lin broke through nine seconds before the buzzer. A foul during a bonus situation gave him two free throws. He made both, and defense blocked Qatar from scoring again. The final score was 18-16 after Taiwan’s incredible comeback. The victory gave Taiwan its ninth gold at this year’s Asian Games, marking a milestone for Taiwan basketball.
