US President Donald Trump’s 32% “retaliatory tariff” on Taiwanese goods came as a shock to the whole world. Not least for Taiwan, for the announcement coincided with the start of a 4-day long weekend beginning on April 3. But over the past four days, the administration did not get a single day off. The back-to-back meetings culminated in five major response policies, announced by President Lai Ching-te in the evening of April 6.

President Lai Ching-te addressed the US’ new 32% tariff on Taiwan imports. He offered words of assurance, and proposed concrete plans to handle the situation.

Taiwan has established a negotiation team, lead by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun. We will begin negotiations on a tariff treaty based on the USMCA trade agreement. The starting point of negotiations will be zero tariffs between the US and Taiwan.
In his 8-minute address, Lai outlined five major response policies, including forming a negotiation team, expanding investments in the US and scheduling a tour to listen to the opinions of major industries in Taiwan. But opposition parties aren’t having it.

The opposition is just having an emotional reaction. They’re speaking out of resentment. Taiwan is a small country, so I think investment in the US is part of the solution.
The DPP retorts that it’s not the time for such petty comments. After all, the announcement came as a shock over the long weekend.
Premier Cho jung-tai is said to have called a meeting in the early morning just shortly after the new tariffs were announced in the early hours of April 3 Taiwan time. In the afternoon, cabinet officials arrived at the president’s official residence to discuss contingency plans. In the afternoon of April 4, the cabinet held a press conference announcing their plans and a NT$8.8 billion relief package. The afternoons of the following two days, officials met with business representatives across several industries. By the evening of April 6, the president announced the government’s five major policies to mitigate the impact of the new tariffs. All this was done in a 100-hour time frame.

Taiwan’s industrial development is the ultimate goal of both the ruling administration and opposition parties. It doesn’t matter which country we invest in. The objective is to earn money, and that is something we all hope for. But all the KMT does is offer sarcastic remarks without offering constructive solutions, and continue to doubt Taiwan’s relationship with the US. I find that completely uncalled for.
The government is on high alert for the impact of Trump’s so called “reciprocal tariffs,” while preparing response measures. Political bickering is not going to get a solution.

川普政府宣布對台課徵32%關稅，府院四天內，展開100小時馬拉松拆彈，多管齊下、立刻盤整各項談判工具、籌碼方向，也端實質政策。總統賴清德昨(6號)傍晚向民眾發表8分鐘談話，祭出五大因應對策，包括即刻組成談判小組赴美，從臺美雙方零關稅談起，擴大對美投資，以具體行動，展現政府因應策略。

美國宣布對台祭出32%關稅後，總統賴清德首次公開談話，不只喊話安撫民心，更拿出具體解決方案。

“台灣已經組成談判小組，由行政院鄭麗君副院長領軍。談判關稅可以從比照美加墨自貿協定，從台美雙方"零關稅"開始談起。”

綠委要在野黨別唱衰台灣。畢竟面對這波挑戰，府院早沙盤推演布局，
台灣時間3號凌晨美方公布關稅數字後，清晨行政院長卓榮泰即領軍開會，下午轉至總統官邸，國安團隊會議，4號下午政院召開記者會，宣布對策及880億協助方案，5、6號下午分別會晤ICT及傳產、中小微型企業，晚間由總統親自向國人說明，政府五大對策。府院4天，100小時馬拉松拆彈，兵分多路、多管齊下，盤整各項談判工具、籌碼方向，以具體行動，展現政府因應策略。

“任何執政團隊或者是在野黨共同關心台灣的產業發展，不管到哪個國家投資，讓大家可以賺大錢這件事，是大家都樂見的，但是如果國民黨到目前為止都只會說風涼話，然後沒有辦法提出積極的建設，甚至還是持續懷疑台灣跟美國的關係，我認為大可不必。”
關稅戰衝擊台灣，府院嚴陣以待、端實質政策應對，此時最不需要的就是政治口水。
