Taiex plunges record-breaking 2,065 points before forced closing

The US’ “retaliatory tariffs” have rattled stock markets across the world. After four days off, on Monday, stocks in Taiwan plummeted as soon as markets opened, triggering circuit breakers. The Taiex plunged 2,065 points and closed at 19,232 points, marking the largest fall in a single day ever. Meanwhile, TSMC shares shed the maximum 94 points and closed at 848.

It means that the overall investor sentiment is under fear and stress. Investors believe the whole world is in a short position. But don’t be so fast to go bottom fishing yet, as one would call it. Because at this point, there’s no indication that the bottom’s been reached. Looking at the policy front for now, it seems like there’s not much going on that’s supporting the market yet. However, we can also see that the Financial Regulatory Commission and the Taiwan Stock Exchange have time and again reassured investors that they’ll continue keeping an eye on the Taiex.

Unlike in the past when the Financial Regulatory Commission would respond incrementally, this time it came ready with three response measures the day before markets open to prevent shorting. The National Stabilization Fund, worth NT$500 billion is also on standby. Regardless, markets still took a deep plunge after a long weekend.

“代表現在目前整體盤面的氣氛，是籠罩在恐慌的壓力之下，認為是全球都已經進入到了空頭的一個局面，暫時先不要那麼輕易的，就進場去抄所謂的底，因為到目前為止，底部的訊號並沒有出現。政策上面初看起來，好像沒有什麼太大的撐盤的效果，不過我們看到，金管會跟證交所這邊，也其實都持續的承諾投資人說，在這邊會不斷的留意大盤的變化”

有別以往都是先經過股市反應、再漸進處理，金管會在開盤前一天就宣布三大措施，限制放空，還有規模5000億的國安基金在場邊備戰，但從綠油油的盤面看來，投資人對政策不買單。

A Taiwanese YouTuber was allegedly mistaken for a member of the Taliban while travelling in India. The confusion apparently happened at a restaurant, where influencer Alisasa was having a chat with the owner. She says she told the owner she was from Taiwan, which the restaurateur mistook for Taliban. Incredulous netizens, did not quite believe the tale, and reached out to the operator for verification.

I remember one time at a restaurant in India, the owner asked me “Where are you from?” And I said “Oh! I’m from Taiwan.” And he was like “Taiwan?” I said, “Yes, Taiwan.” Then he confirmed again, “Ta-li-wan?” At that moment I thought… Well… His pronunciation was a bit off, but I let it slide. I just said, “Mmm, Yeah, yeah, yeah, Taliwan, Taliwan.” But the look on the owner’s face suddenly changed like…

She told the owner of the restaurant she was from Taiwan, which he misheard as “Taliban,” the ultraconservative militant group in Afghanistan. The tale caught fire on the internet.

Internet users say the misunderstanding doesn’t seem likely, as “Taiwan” is only two syllables long and Taliban has three syllables. They also say Taiwan is usually just confused with Thailand. But Alisasa insists that her story is real.

She posted the location of the restaurant saying “I swear to God I’m telling the truth. Some Indian’s don’t even have the word ‘Taiwan’ in their heads.” But a netizen actually contacted the restaurant to verify the story.

But the owner of the restaurant says he had never made any statements about Taiwan, nor had he ever confused or referred to Taiwan as “Taliban.” As if that weren’t enough for Alisasa, sports commentator Shih Ming-chin added fuel to the fire, saying that if he were asked if he is from Taliwan, he would have absolutely said “No, no, no! It’s Taiwan.” Meanwhile, in the comments, travel YouTuber Outside Richie posted a highlight reel of him discussing Taiwan with Indians.

Most Indians in Outside Richie’s video seemed to have a positive image of Taiwan. Alisasa has since backpedalled, saying that her awkward conversation was with an employee at the restaurant, not with the owner.

Toy Festival begins in Yancheng with treasure hunt, capsule game

The fourth annual Yancheng Toy Festival has begun! Through treasure and scavenger hunts, people can explore Yancheng and try out classic children’s games. The special part about this year’s festival is the huge capsule toy machine. But this isn’t your average gacha. It’s made entirely of cardboard boxes collected by students from around the district, making it both environmentally friendly and innovative.

Capsules with toys inside are poured into a huge cardboard gachamachine. This environmentally friendly creation was made entirely from boxes collected from stores around Yancheng.

This year’s Yancheng Toy Festival was organized in collaboration with the Yancheng Institute, Haiching Vocational High School of Technology, and Sanmin Vocational High School of Home Economics. 32 businesses are also taking part by hiding toys in their stores. By going on a treasure hunt around Yancheng to find them, participants can earn capsules.

Students serve as guides, taking people on tours of Yancheng in both Chinese and English. By playing with vintage toys, participants can also experience what childhood was like for earlier generations.

With all kinds of sculptures and paintings on display, this place feels like an art gallery. But it’s actually a famous Japanese sushi restaurant.

Lai proposes five response measures to Trump tariffs

US President Donald Trump’s 32% “retaliatory tariff” on Taiwanese goods came as a shock to the whole world. Not least for Taiwan, for the announcement coincided with the start of a 4-day long weekend beginning on April 3. But over the past four days, the administration did not get a single day off. The back-to-back meetings culminated in five major response policies, announced by President Lai Ching-te in the evening of April 6.

President Lai Ching-te addressed the US’ new 32% tariff on Taiwan imports. He offered words of assurance, and proposed concrete plans to handle the situation.

Taiwan has established a negotiation team, lead by Vice Premier Cheng Li-chun. We will begin negotiations on a tariff treaty based on the USMCA trade agreement. The starting point of negotiations will be zero tariffs between the US and Taiwan.

In his 8-minute address, Lai outlined five major response policies, including forming a negotiation team, expanding investments in the US and scheduling a tour to listen to the opinions of major industries in Taiwan. But opposition parties aren’t having it.

Premier Cho jung-tai is said to have called a meeting in the early morning just shortly after the new tariffs were announced in the early hours of April 3 Taiwan time. In the afternoon, cabinet officials arrived at the president’s official residence to discuss contingency plans. In the afternoon of April 4, the cabinet held a press conference announcing their plans and a NT$8.8 billion relief package. The afternoons of the following two days, officials met with business representatives across several industries. By the evening of April 6, the president announced the government’s five major policies to mitigate the impact of the new tariffs. All this was done in a 100-hour time frame.

Taiwan’s industrial development is the ultimate goal of both the ruling administration and opposition parties. It doesn’t matter which country we invest in. The objective is to earn money, and that is something we all hope for. But all the KMT does is offer sarcastic remarks without offering constructive solutions, and continue to doubt Taiwan’s relationship with the US. I find that completely uncalled for.

The government is on high alert for the impact of Trump’s so called “reciprocal tariffs,” while preparing response measures. Political bickering is not going to get a solution.
