Forestry agency gives survival tips for human-black bear encounters

The Taiwanese black bear population is growing, and while this is exciting news for nature lovers, this conservation achievement has led to increased black bear sightings, which are typically due to hungry bears. The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency reminds nature lovers to always carry bear spray with them and to avoid startling the furry beasts.

Recently there have been a lot of black bear sightings, which shows that their territory is getting increasingly closer to the areas where people live and travel.
Popular hiking routes in Nantou County’s Xinyi Township, like the Danda Trail, and Renai Township’s Nenggao Cross-Ridge Historical Trail have had black bear sightings. But what should hikers do if they end up crossing paths with Taiwan’s largest land animal?
The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency held an educational course in which a person put on a furry costume and pretended to be a bear. But when he stood up his cover was blown. The FNCA said nature lovers should carry bear spray at all times, and, when necessary, use it to create enough time to escape to safety.
The areas Taiwanese black bears are active in are getting increasingly closer to human settlements, so people need to avoid black bear encounters.

Don’t panic, and don’t try to take a photo just because you ended up seeing a black bear. You need to slowly leave the area and don’t startle the bear.
The FNCA said that when Taiwanese black bears come down from their mountainous habitats it’s usually to find food. So, to minimize the risk of a bear encounter, the public is reminded to properly store food and kitchen waste.

臺灣黑熊保育有成，族群得以順利繁衍，也因為食物需求量大，黑熊會下山覓食，出沒範圍與人類生活區域，越來越接近，南投縣仁愛鄉、信義鄉，拍攝到黑熊出掌，彷彿是要迫使監視鏡頭"低頭道歉"!而林業署也辦理教育訓練課程，增進民眾遇到黑熊的應變能力。
這邊拍、那裏撥，台灣黑熊還把鏡頭都打得低下頭來，是不高興被偷拍嗎。

南投縣信義鄉熱門路徑，像是丹大林道，或者仁愛鄉能高越嶺段，都有黑熊出沒的紀錄，如果山友與牠正面遭遇了，知道該怎麼辦嗎。
林保署辦教育訓練課程，就看他披上假熊皮裝成熊，可是突然站起來露了餡。林業署示範，山友最好隨身攜帶防熊噴霧，必要的時候按下去，爭取逃命機會。
台灣黑熊活動範圍逐漸貼近人類生活區域，民眾要避免發生衝突。

林保署提醒，黑熊下山來，多半是來找吃的，所以，民眾的食物、廚餘，要妥善存放，以免招來熊熊危機。
