Spring season brings theater art festival to Dadaocheng

Theater performances and workshops will be taking over Dadaocheng in Taipei this spring season. The historic neighborhood will host activities ranging from Taiwanese operas to puppet DIYs. For foreign visitors, there will also be tours given in English to get everyone immersed in Taiwan’s stage performance culture. FTV reporter Stephany Yang has the highlights!

Theater is in the air this spring at Dadaocheng. For the first time, 100 dancers from Tokyo’s Koenji Awa Odori will perform on Dihua Street. In addition, Visitors can listen to Taiwanese opera performances and even try on traditional costumes. There’s also DIY activities such as puppet-making from recycled materials.

There’s puppet shows, Taiwanese opera… You can wear the costumes and learn to sing. Also, learn the poses and even go on the street to take pictures. Of course, you have to drink Taiwanese tea when you come to Taiwan. After drinking tea, the most relevant opera to pair with tea is Nanguan, which is a bit like Western jazz, a little chill, a little slower. You can experience it in a very leisurely and classy space.

The festival aims to showcase Dadaocheng’s rich history as a hub for traditional Taiwanese opera. The event will also offer English tours to attract more international visitors. To sing up, visit the event’s official website.

Many foreigners visit Taipei or even Dadaocheng when they first come to Taiwan. The main reason is that there are traditional things here, and it is not enough to just take a quick look. Last year, we began offering English tours and opera experiences. We found that the response was excellent. They want to know what the history of Taipei is. A large part of Taipei’s history is actually related to Dadaocheng. You can learn about which houses used to sell Chinese medicine, and hear their stories. You can also learn that the temple worshipps the God of Marriage, and explore the close relationship between tea and Dadaocheng, and how the tea from here was sold all over the world in the 1860s.

The Spring Theatrical Art Festival in Dadaocheng will be held from April 18 until April 27.

今年第9屆戲春大稻埕將於4月18日至4月27日盛大展開！這個歷史街區將舉辦各種活動，從台灣戲曲表演到木偶DIY。對於外國遊客，也將提供英語導覽，讓大家沉浸在台灣的舞台表演文化中。

今年春天，大稻埕充滿了戲劇氣息。東京高圓寺阿波舞的100名舞者將首次在迪化街進行表演。此外，遊客還可以欣賞台灣戲曲表演，試穿傳統服裝。另外還有一些DIY 活動，例如用回收材料製作木偶。

"外國人，很多人第一個來到台灣，都會來到台北，甚至來到大稻埕，主要是因為這裡有傳統的東西，只是走馬看花的話，其實是不夠的，所以我們去年就開始有外國的導覽以及戲曲體驗，我們發現反應非常的好，他們想要了解台北的歷史是什麼，台北的歷史很大的一部分其實跟大稻埕有關，可以知道說，這個房子以前是賣中藥，然後有什麼故事，這個城隍廟原來有拜月老，這個茶跟大稻埕有什麼關係，茶原來是在1860年賣到全世界"

Car owner tapes piece of A4-sized paper in place of missing license plate

What would you do if one day you go to your car and find out that the license plate is missing? Well, one unlucky car owner in Kaohsiung got a piece of paper and wrote a note explaining that his vehicle was missing a license plate. Fellow drivers might’ve felt sympathy for the car owner, but to the police, a hand-written note placed where the license plate should be, could be cause for a very expensive fine.

This driver on their morning commute couldn’t believe their eyes when they saw that the car in front of them had a rather unusual license plate. On closer inspection the driver saw that the plate was actually a piece of A4 paper.

A person filmed saw a car that was missing its license plate. This vehicle had a piece of paper taped over where the license plate goes, and the note was asking for others to be sympathetic towards the driver’s loss. We might just end up shedding a tear on behalf of this driver, yet, the problem is, this driver’s actions may be a traffic violation.

A stolen license plate really is rotten luck, and people can have sympathy for the driver’s plight, but this might lead to others mistakenly believing that all they have to do in this situation is write up a note like this and then hit the road.

This is ridiculous. What will happen if there’s an accident, right? I don’t think people should do stuff like this, because a license plate is like a car’s ID card.

Our precinct hasn’t had a citizen report a traffic violation related to this, but our precinct will notify the owner to come in and provide an explanation.

The police said that they didn’t receive a traffic violation report the day the video was filmed, yet a situation like this isn’t uncommon, as vehicles lose their license plates in situations like typhoons and floods. People walking down the street pick up license plates all the time. The Kaohsiung Motor Vehicles Office advises car owners who have missing license plates to report the matter at a police station as soon as possible.

A temporary license plate can be applied for and owners can also go to a motor vehicles office, where they can receive a new plate after having their car inspected. If you have a police report for a missing plate and you go to a motor vehicles office, then of course it’s no problem to have your vehicle inspected and receive a new plate. If a license plate is not displayed according to the law, then the owner will be fined between NT$3,600 and NT$10,800.

A fine up to NT$10,800 can be charged to car owners who don’t report their vehicle’s missing license plate or get a new plate as soon as possible. And a fine that large surely can’t be paid for with tears of sympathy.

Kaohsiung farm recaptures meerkats after tunnel escape

Two meerkats at a farm in Kaohsiung recently tunneled underground, looking to escape from their enclosure. Luckily, the farm discovered their plan and met the creatures on the other side, ready to scoop them right back into their pen.

Just underneath this brick is a meerkat. He was trying to escape, but farm workers were standing guard at the end of his tunnel. One grabbed his behind while the other grabbed his tail before putting him right back into his enclosure.

Just after him was another meerkat looking to follow suit.

Seeing there was no way out, the meerkat obediently turned tail and went back. This failed prison break took place at a farm in Kaohsiung.

Two meerkats dug a tunnel out of their enclosure, then pushed their way past the sidewalk bricks. We caught the first one. That one belongs to our breeder. They raised him, so he’s comfortable with people and won’t bite. The second one I captured with a net.

The meerkats at this farm are lively. When they see people nearby, they’ll reach out toward them. Their enclosure is made of transparent glass and netting. But they naturally tunnel, and almost escaped by digging a route under the glass and through the bricks on the other side.

This is the second time something like this has happened. It’s in their nature to dig. They’re digging tunnels. Each one has different uses.

They’re cute from far away, but a little scary up close.

Meerkats are known for standing upright and looking around with their searching eyes. But if you look a little closer, you’ll find that most of the time, they’re tunneling. To accommodate this habit, the Shoushan Zoo in Kaohsiung has a large water pipe for them to use as their very own tunnel.

Concerts boost Kaohsiung to Taiwan’s top travel destination

Kaohsiung welcomed 69.23 million visitors last year, the most in Taiwan. Events large and small were the biggest draw, including the New Year’s Eve concert, Kaohsiung Wonderland, and Cijin Kite Festival. That’s not to mention the enormous business opportunities brought by hosting major concerts. Hotels have seen the benefits with significant increases in occupancy rates. Travelers themselves are also impressed with the changes they’ve seen in the southern port city.

Pop star Jeannie Hsieh headlines Kaohsiung’s festivities to welcome 2024.

Kaohsiung Wonderland was a sensation around Taiwan, and 9 million people came to see the adorable yellow ducks. In the summer, families flocked to the Cijin Kite Festival.

Thanks to these events, Kaohsiung is on people’s radar more than ever before. And that’s in addition to the crowds who take the light rail to the Pier 2 Art Center every day.

Kaohsiung regularly holds all sorts of arts and cultural events, attracting lots of visitors. Concerts are an especially big draw.

In 2023, Kaohsiung hosted 117 concerts. By last year, that had increased to 157. Domestic and foreign bands alike have graced stages in the city, even drawing fans from abroad. Hoteliers say they can see the effect from occupancy rates alone.

Occupancy increased 30% in 2023 and 13% in 2024. In the first quarter of this year, it’s already increased by nearly 50% from the same period in 2022.

The hotel also offers package tours in conjunction with events in the city, which in turn has boosted occupancy rates by 10 to 20% or more over the past few years.

Local business owners are also feeling the benefits of this recent influx of tourism.

Make your own matcha and play with meerkats here

Today we take you to an animal cafe in Taipei that sells matcha desserts and allows patrons to make their own matcha. Aside from desserts, visitors can also play with meerkats, dogs, and cats. FTV reporter Stephany Yang takes us in for a look!

Pour hot water into the bowl and start whisking matcha with a bamboo whisk until it becomes frothy. At this store, visitors can make their own matcha and participate in a Japanese tea ceremony.

Their matcha desserts are just as mouth-watering. Popular desserts include matcha tiramisu, matcha swiss rolls, matcha cheesecake, matcha ice cream with adzuki beans, and more.

Want something savory? There’s salmon and truffle chazuke and Japanese-style butter sauce pan-seared fish. The owner admires Japanese culture and the animal cafes there. Therefore, he decided to recreate one in Taiwan.

The owner likes Japanese culture very much, and he will fly to Japan from time to time. In Japan, animal cafes are very popular. There are also many varieties. He hopes that there can be a space like that in Taiwan. For drinks or desserts, guests are provided with the whisks to try out. We use higher-grade matcha so that there is a richer tea aroma.

This animal cafe in Taipei allows patrons to play with meerkats.

The store also allows patrons to play with meerkats, dogs, and cats. Visitors must register in advance to play with meerkats for a maximum of five minutes. To ensure that animals are treated well, a animal caretaker will be around to give patrons advice.
