US President Donald Trump says the country will levy tariffs of 100% on semiconductor imports, with an exemption for companies that have factories in the US. TSMC is among those that would be exempt, having established a plant in the US. Though costs are higher in the US, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and AMD CEO Lisa Su have said they will place orders with TSMC, and Apple remains TSMC’s largest client. Let’s hear more.

TSMC is set to be completely exempt of being levied these semiconductor tariffs. We will keep monitoring the impact of this implementation of Section 232 of the US’ Trade Expansion Act on Taiwan’s semiconductor supply chains, and the broader electronics industry.

Taiwan’s stock market rallied after the announcement, closing up 556 points to soar above the 24,000-point mark. TSMC shares gained 4.89% to reach a new high of NT$1,180, pushing the company’s market cap past NT$30 trillion.

Foreign-born Kaohsiung resident finds incorrect map location of air-raid shelters

A serious error has been identified with the official map of air-raid shelters in Kaohsiung. That’s despite the fact that Taiwan’s annual joint military and civilian defense drills concluded just about three weeks ago. A foreign-born resident in the city has discovered that many shelters were incorrectly located on the latest map. And on top of that, there were even locations that should not have been selected in the first place. Our exclusive report.

About half of Mingcheng Borough has this issue. We really need to be able to get to an air-raid shelter quickly. It’s safer that way.

Michel Deniau is a French teacher in Kaohsiung married to a Taiwanese woman. He wanted to check where he and his family would have to take shelter in an air-raid, but found a discrepancy on the official information. He then started to verify the listed locations in his neighborhood. Since then, he’s compiled a spreadsheet, on which the many cells marked in red are shelters with incorrect locations on the map.

I’ve lived in Taiwan for around eight years now. It’s my new home. I also hope to contribute my bit. I hope I can protect myself and my family, friends, students and other Kaohsiung residents.

Apart from incorrect locations, the spreadsheet also identifies locations that don’t have clear signage, even in the case of a police station. There’s also plenty of sites that are no good for shelters, a bottled gas supplier and a construction site.

When we do this kind of geo-tagging online for air-raid shelter identification, there’s also the issue of accuracy. If we make a mistake, then the public could be thrust towards a more dangerous location in the event of a disaster, or they would not even find a shelter to begin with.

Deniau says he was driven by his motivation to do his bit to help bolster Taiwan’s defense resilience.

Cultural expo and mascot promote Taiwanese culture in Osaka

The Ministry of Culture is holding a cultural expo in Osaka tha tsaw 16,000 visitors in just two days. It also cooperated with Taiwanese entrepreneurs in Osaka to promote their businesses. In July, Taiwanese people even crowd-funded advertisements on public transportation and created a giant balloon of the expo mascot, A-we, which flew over Osaka to spread awareness of Taiwanese culture.

Whether flying high in the sky or resting on the ground, the Taiwan cultural expo mascot A-we has enchanted the people of Osaka.

A-we merchandise is taking Japan by storm, selling out in just two hours on its first day of sales. The handmade dolls are especially popular, but socks, pins, capsule toys, and hats are all selling out. A-we is popular among people of all ages, mainly because of their love for Taiwan.

This is mango shaved ice made with Taiwanese Irwin mango. They also offer aiyu jelly made from Taiwanese fig seeds, which is a top choice. They even serve tea from the Alishan mountain range. The owner here is from Chiayi and moved to Japan after getting married. She displays a “We Taiwan” cultural expo poster on the wall, proudly sharing the culture of her homeland.

I started this business 15 or 16 years ago. There weren’t a lot of Taiwanese people here then, and very few Taiwanese restaurants. So, I thought, why not promote Taiwanese culture, which was my original motivation when starting.

A total of 20 Taiwanese business owners in Osaka cooperated with the Ministry of Culture for the expo. At the expo itself, the enthusiasm and support of Taiwanese people is ever-present.

Gongliao farmers shift from abalone to sea urchin farming

Situated on Taiwan’s northeastern coastline, New Taipei City’s Gongliao District is known for its nine-hole abalone. But in recent years its sales have been impacted by the influx of cheaper Chinese abalone, leading many aquatic farmers to instead begin harvesting sea urchins. Although their production is increasing annually, the supply still cannot meet demand, prompting the city government to launch an artificial breeding program to help stabilize production.

With its round shell and short, dense spines, this golden-brown sea urchin is firmly attached to the reef. This is a natural reef off the coast of New Taipei City’s Gongliao District.

Carrying proper equipment, the divers collect abalone from the rocks and toss them in a container. They also search for sea urchins lurking in the cracks between rocks, harvesting them together.

The two kinds of sea urchins currently farmed on the northeast coast are purple sea urchins and black sea urchins. About five years ago, people gradually started shifting to sea urchin farming, and production is reaching a peak this year. Since Taiwanese people love eating sea urchins, Gongliao’s current production can hardly keep up with demand.

Gongliao District on Taiwan’s northeastern coast is famous for its abalone, known as nine-hole or Taiwanese abalone. But due to cheap Chinese abalone flooding the market, many aquatic farmers have instead begun cultivating sea urchins. The sea urchin harvest season runs from June to September, and because of their enormous appetites, sea urchins require a large supply of seaweed.

Nine-hole abalone and sea urchins should really be raised separately. When I tried raising them together, the abalone wouldn’t get enough seaweed, which would impact its production. The sea urchins would eat all the seaweed.

We started implementing the sea urchin restoration project last year. From last year to this year, we have bred a total of over 30,000. We released 6,000 last year and 10,000 this year. We hope that local farmers raising nine-hole abalone can gain an additional source of income in the summer by farming sea urchins.

Many people love the rich, creamy flavor of sea urchin. In northeastern Taiwan, an area already known for its abalone, sea urchin is becoming the next star of local seafood.

Brake failure sends police car crashing into building

Police officers were dispatched to deal with a dispute at a hostess club, only to end up crashing their car and injuring two by-standers. The incident happened during the wee hours of Thursday in Taipei’s East District. As the police officers had arrived by car at the building, the car had a brake failure and crashed right into the entrance of the building. The splattering glass shards cut two passers-by. Fortunately, no one was critically injured.

It’s late into the night and a police car is rushing to a commercial building. When it’s about to park, the car has a brake failure and crashes right into the entrance. The glass doors shatter, and the scene frightens everyone who happened to be there.

After the crash, the building entrance was completely defaced, with glass shattered and beams deformed. As for the vehicle in question, the front was also severely damaged, and so was the headlight on the left. The airbags were released, meaning, the impact of the crash was quite something.

Fortunately, none of the officers on the car were injured, but a man and a woman at the entrance of the building did get cut by glass shards on the legs. They were immediately sent to emergency care.

In the morning, people come in and out of the building. Guards have been stationed to keep watch over the scene.

The incident happened in the early hours of Thursday at a commercial building on the busy Section 4 of Zhongxiao East Road in Taipei. The police was on their way to handle a dispute at a hostess club in the building. The vehicle had passed a safety check before they headed out. It’s unbelievable that a failure would occur while it had just arrived at the doorsteps. It was later revealed that the car had only undergone repair and maintenance in April. Per regulations, a police vehicle is to be decommissioned when the mileage hits 125,000km or when it reaches 15 years in service. The car in question only logged in over 80,000km but had been in use since 2011, making it just one year close to expiry. After the incident, the vehicle was immediately decommissioned.

The incident caused severe damage to the front of the patrolling vehicle. In addition, the building in question also had the framing and glass of the entrance gate damaged. Our colleague had a value of zero in an alcohol test.

The police also said they will pay for repairs after getting a quote, and that not a single cent will go unpaid. In any case, the scene really was quite a shock even when replayed.
