Japan says meeting with Taiwan APEC envoy in line with longstanding policy

At last week’s APEC summit, Japan PM Takaichi Sanae met with Taiwan’s envoy Lin Hsin-yi. She later posted about the meeting on social media, referring to Lin as a senior advisor to Taiwan’s Presidential Office. The meeting drew protests in China, which accused Japan of violating China’s own “one China principle.” In response, Japan’s Ministry of Defense and Ministry of Foreign Affairs have made statements saying that the meet was in line with Japan’s government policy. Japanese prime ministers have met with Taiwanese figures on multiple occasions in the past. The meeting does not violate the 1972 Japan-China Joint Communiqué, which allows for maintaining unofficial ties with Taiwan. Japan’s position on the matter remains unchanged.

Taiwan and Japan share close economic ties and frequent people-to-people exchanges. Taiwan is an important partner for us, and a valued friend. Peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait is crucial to Japan’s national security and to the stability of the international community.
On Nov. 1, Japan’s Defense Minister also met with China’s Denfense Minister Dong Jun during the ASEAN meeting in Malaysia. Then, he stated the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. On Tuesday, he once again emphasizes that Taiwan sits at an important transportation route for Japan’s trade. With public statements in support of Taiwan, bilateral ties between Japan and Taiwan remain solid.

中國抗議"日相高市會見林信義" 外務大臣反駁:不違反日本政府立場

南韓上週APEC峰會，日本首相高市早苗，和台灣領袖代表林信義會面，並PO文稱呼他為"台灣總統府資政"，讓中國外交部跳腳，痛批違反"一個中國"原則。為此日本防衛大臣小泉進次郎、以及外務大臣茂木敏充，先後發言強調，相關會面，並不違反日本政府既有立場性。

其實小泉1號在馬來西亞的東協會議上，和中國國防部長董軍會面時，就曾聲明維護台海和平穩定的重要性。4號他又再度強調，台灣位在海上交通要衝，對日本貿易運輸相當重要。日本政壇高層紛紛表態、力挺台灣，也象徵台日關係，再度邁進一大步。
