Thousands make mochi at once during Pingtung harvest festival

2025-11-05

The month-long Liudui Autumn Harvest Festival is underway at the local Hakka cultural park, where the public was invited to join in on a group mochi-making activity. Wielding wooden pestles, kids and adults alike pounded glutinous rice, dyed golden-yellow with gardenia, into balls. Everyone had a blast taking part in this Hakka tradition.

Performers wave huge flags to the thunderous beat of drums to usher in the beginning of the 2025 Liudui Autumn Harvest Festival.

At the event, there was also a lively and engaging Hakka-language lesson.

The festival is ongoing for a month at the Liudui Hakka Cultural Park in Pingtung County. But the grand finale of the opening ceremony was thousands making ciba, a type of Hakka mochi, together.

Gripping wooden pestles, participants pound away inside bowls of glutinous rice produced right here in the park, dyed the natural way with gardenia flowers. After they’re steamed, powdered sugar is sprinkled on top. Over half an hour of pummeling later, and they’re finally ready to eat.

Ciba, or mochi, is a rice-based food with a very long history in Hakka culture. Liudui could be considered Taiwan’s first developed Hakka settlement. Over time, they basically added one household after another, six clans in total, interconnecting with one another. It’s like when we mash the ciba. You take the rice, each grain distinct from each other, and through effort, transform it into a solid mass.

Over the next month, the Hakka Culture Development Center is also hosting a themed party, Hakka culinary experiences, road race, and a mass banquet to immerse visitors in the charm of Liudui’s rich Hakka culture.
