DPP Lawmaker ‘wanted’ by China speaks at Germany’s Bundestag

China recently initiated an investigation and a global manhunt for Taiwanese DPP Lawmaker Puma Shen, for the alleged crime of “separatism.” But it doesn’t seem to have had much of a deterrent effect on Shen, who attended a hearing at the German Bundestag on Wednesday in his capacity as lawmaker. Let’s hear what he said.

When I testify here in Germany, authoritarian regions may immediately spread conspiracy theories that I am funded by Germany, which I’m not. Just recently the Chinese government just publicly announced that I am wanted, and simply because of my academic work on disinformation and also my public education efforts in Taiwan. And they also warned me a few days ago and said that I could face a global arrest if I travel abroad. And yet I’m here, sitting here in Germany to speak for my study, to speak for my country, to speak for the freedom of expression.

Shen underscored that he would never back down. He stressed that it was not just an issue of defending Taiwan’s democracy, but an issue of fighting for freedom and democracy in the world.

沈伯洋表示，絕對不會因為這樣而退縮，他強調不只是在捍衛我們國家的民主而已，我們是為全世界的自由民主而戰。

Translation forum promotes Taiwanese literature worldwide

The National Museum of Taiwan Literature held an international forum on translation and publishing this month, welcoming professionals from Singapore, Japan, South Korea, and other countries to discuss their experiences translating Taiwanese literature. The forum, called “Symphony of Island and Literature,” highlighted translation talent and international exchange, while promoting Taiwanese literature in the international market.

Editors, academics, and publishers from around the world gather at this international forum hosted by the National Museum of Taiwan Literature to share their professional experiences. The forum included a workshop on translating Taiwanese literature, organized in partnership with the British Centre for Literary Translation, which welcomed 20 passionate young translators.

We hope that through this kind of international forum, the 20 emerging translators selected to participate will gain the momentum they need to bring Taiwanese literature to the world.

The first part of the forum was hosted by Singaporean writer and translator Jeremy Tiang and featured talks from Korean translator Kim Tae-sung, Japanese translator Uozumi Etsuko, and Polish sinologist Maciej Artur Gaca. They discussed the challenges and triumphs of promoting Taiwanese literature in their respective national markets.

In the English-speaking world, translations of Taiwanese literature are still rather rare, so I hope we can learn something from other linguistic communities. I also hope that the students and young translators here will be inspired to translate and promote Taiwanese literature.

Celebrity look-alike post office manager designs unique products

The manager of the Chunghwa Post Office on Yilan’s Xihou Street, Lee Chia-wen, has drawn attention for looking like the Korean actress and singer Jang Na-ra. Her colleagues say she not only has the celebrity’s looks, but she’s also creative. She’s designed many products that feature the post office mascot, a pigeon named Popoman, organized a mail carrier experience camp, and promoted iMail, all to make the post office more visible to the public.

Attentively listening to her colleague’s report with sparkling eyes and a sweet smile, this is the manager of the Chunghwa Post Office on Yilan’s Xihou Street, Lee Chia-wen. She’s always working hard, but never seems to forget her smile, which many people have said reminds them of a certain celebrity.

Lee has been praised by her colleagues for looking like the Korean actress and singer Jang Na-ra. They say that especially when she smiles, their eyes look almost exactly the same.

Lee is 37 years old and married with two children. She studied finance and banking at university. Drawn by the Chunghwa Post Office’s warm environment, she passed the special examination to work there even before graduating. She’s been there for 15 years now. During that time, she’s earned a reputation for her work ethic and creativity.

These adorable phone stands, mousepads, containers, and buttons featuring the post office mascot Popoman were all designed by Lee.

These are mainly to promote the core services of our post office. For example, we previously designed personalized stamps, and then we added the post office mascot, Popoman the pigeon, as a way to get more traffic. Then we posted them online as part of a giveaway, hoping to attract more attention from young people.

Popoman has proven to be a great marketing tool. Through Lee’s designs and Popoman’s charm, the post office’s personalized stamp sales have grown tenfold.

When we worked at different offices, I bought some products she designed and thought they were really practical. They’re great for putting on children’s bookbags. Even though I didn’t know her at the time, I thought her products were really appealing.

Post offices have been losing their popularity recently, with less customers coming through the doors. But as a passionate manager, Lee applies her creativity to share the warmth she found working at the post office with more people.

Taichung Shopping Festival wins prestigious TITAN Innovation Award

The Taichung Shopping Festival is now in full swing, for the seventh year. Not only that, it also won platinum in the 2025 TITAN Innovation Awards, standing out among entries from more than 100 countries. The city government says the campaign was recognized for its innovative approach that utilizes technology to boost local businesses. It also says that winning a top prize only motivates the city to make the festival even better in the coming years.

The jury commended the campaign for its applications of telecommunication technologies, public-private collaboration and overall marketing creativity. The amount of revenue generated and the economic impact was also recognized.

The campaign, titled “One City, One Festival, Infinite Impact” was a platinum winner of the 2025 TITAN Innovation Awards, standing out among applications from more than 100 countries and judged by a panel of experts from more than 30 countries. The Taichung City Government says it will continue to improve the campaign for further reach and impact.

There are two aspects to improve upon. The first is to make the Taichung Shopping Festival more local and further boost local business, and in turn attract more people to Taichung for shopping and tourism. At the same time, we must further promote the Taichung Shopping Festival internationally.

Cafe serves up pineapple iced americano and pistachio basque cheesecake

A newly opened café in Taipei’s Zhongshan District serves up pineapple iced Americano, house-roasted coffee beans, and pistachio Basque cheesecake. Behind the concept is a 27-year-old whose love for coffee led him to spend three years honing his craft at various cafés before launching his own in May. FTV reporter Stephany Yang sat down with the founder, Beau Chang, to learn more about his journey.

Preheat oven to 220°C, then, beat cream cheese and sugar. After that, add the eggs and mix them together.

Add the ground pistachios, flour, and salt. Finally, it’s time to bake for 18 minutes.

I use maybe 220°C to bake for almost 18 minutes so it can bake a smooth texture. For step one, I use the cream cheese, add sugar to put it together. And then, add egg and also a little powder. Also, add pistachio cream and also mix it to very smooth.

Nestled in Taipei’s Zhongshan District, the store was founded by Beau Chang. Chang graduated from college with a degree in Landscape and Recreation from the National Chung Hsing University, but due to his passion for coffee, he decided to spend three years honing his craft at various cafés before launching his own this May.

After I graduated, I start to work at a coffee shop and I also learned lessons outside or studied books, and videos on YouTube or another place. I found that I was interested in coffee and I wanted to create my coffee shop. So I decided to open my coffee shop.

The store is not only known for its pistachio basque, but also for its in-house-roasted beans, hand-poured brews, and cold brews. One highlight is its pineapple iced Americano.

I also roast my coffee beans by myself. I want to help people when they want to drink coffee at home, they can make the coffee easier so I created the cold brew bag so people can very simply to make good coffee when they want to drink, they also can put the cold brew bag into the water and can get easier coffee at home.

Other popular dishes include curry rice and egg salad buns. Chang hopes to create a cozy environment for people to enjoy desserts, meals, and high-quality cold brews.

Restaurant repurposes old sauce cans into take-out containers

With the popularity of take-out and delivery, some restaurants have started using repurposed containers to give their take-out experience a retro flare. As one example, popcorn packaged in recycled paint cans has been trending lately. One restaurant in Chiayi takes it a step further, serving their famous fish head casserole in metal shacha sauce cans. This not only makes ordering take-out more eco-friendly, but offers long-time customers a special perk.

The trend slowly disappeared as plastic bags become common, but with recent waves of environmentalism and retro styles, it has made a comeback.

Other businesses have picked up this trend of using recycled containers, like putting popcorn in repurposed paint cans and adding cute designs. It’s been especially popular with young people.

Not only is the packaging creative, but this popcorn comes in all kinds of Taiwan-inspired flavors, like fried chicken and bubble tea.

Escaped capybara returns after two days in the storm

“Piggy” the capybara from a New Taipei leisure farm recently escaped from his enclosure just as Tropical Strom Fung-wong was about to hit Taiwan. In a short video captured on security camera, he was seen making his escape quite effortlessly—a 90cm leap on a single attempt was all it took. After two days in the rain and wind, he decided that it was no fun outside and made his way back, much to the joy of his companion, a female capybara, and the relief of his owners.

Two capybaras feed on grass side by side. The video is one of cottagecore bliss, but just two days ago, one of the two protagonists, the male named “Piggy” had attempted a great adventure in the storm. Alas, it was probably too rough out there.

That day, the storm happened to be at its strongest. So we thought it must be because he’s still a little baby that’s always been coddled and given a dry indoor space to live in. It was really unnecessary for him to experience the wind and rain outside. He probably had a brief run outside and didn’t enjoy it, and decided that he’d be better off coming home where he can be dry and comfortable.

Turns out, there’s nowhere better than home. Better yet, it’s a spacious leisure farm in New Taipei’s Wanli District. In the early hours of Monday, Piggy made a great 90cm leap over the fence and headed out. The other capybara, a female, began to appear downcast after Piggy went out. The farm owners were also worried, since a typhoon was about to arrive. Fortunately, he returned after just two days.

We will ask an ironsmith to make the fence higher so that the capybaras won’t escape again. But because the weather these past few days was pretty stormy and our neighbors were left with some damage from the storm, we might not be able to get someone to come so soon. For now, before it’s time for bed, we’ll make sure that Piggy gets back here to sleep. At least he’ll be under our watch and won’t cause trouble so easily again.
