Temperatures remained cold across most of Taiwan under the ongoing influence of a continental cold air front. On Friday morning the mercury fell as low as 10.1 degrees in Shiding in New Taipei City. Powdery white snow fell in several mountainous areas including Yushan and the Xinda Cabin in Wuling creating gorgeous snowscapes.

The landscape and vehicles are all covered in white snow. At 6 a.m., graupel and hail fell for about an hour on Hehuanshan. People went up the mountain to catch a glimpse of it and happily snapped pictures. The park authorities also prepared to deploy snow ploughs as a precaution.

Hikers who arrived at Xinda Cabin in Wuling at 4.50 a.m. said the temperature was -4 degrees Celsius and it was snowing intermittently. Some hikers turned back halfway and went down the mountain. Later they got to see snaps of the snowfall from friends who kept on going up.

I just couldn’t take it. They then said it was definitely going to snow. In the early hours of the morning a friend sent me a video of the snow.

Yushan’s north peak similarly became a silver-white winter wonderland. Although the snowfall was not as deep, it was still a stunning wintery scene.

At noon, snow began to fall at the lodge at Chiaming Lake, which is more than 3,000m above sea level, surprising and delighting many hikers.

In the early hours of Friday morning, temperatures in the lowlands fell as low as 10.1°C in Shiding, New Taipei City. Temperatures also fell below 12°C in areas north of Taichung, in Eastern Taiwan and in mountainous areas in Yunlin. The outlying archipelago of Matsu even saw temperatures plummet to 9°C.

Cold air in the north is passing over the ocean, creating cloud formations and making the weather colder in all places. After Saturday, as the cold air front weakens, temperatures everywhere will gradually rise.

Starting Saturday, the cold air front will gradually weaken, and the mercury will gradually rise. There will be vast temperature differences between central and southern Taiwan. Then, on Tuesday, another wave of northeasterly winds will sweep in.

冷氣團發威! 今晨石碇低溫僅10.1度玉山飄雪了

大陸冷氣團持續發威，週五清晨本島平地低溫在新北石碇，只有10.1度，來到高山，因為溫度、跟水氣配合下，像是武陵新達山屋、玉山、嘉明湖，都開始降雪。

地上、車上已經覆蓋白白一片，合歡山上清晨6點多，持續下了一小時的冰霰、跟冰雹，上山追雪民眾開心拍照，園方也出動鏟雪車預備。

再來到武陵四秀的新達山屋，清晨4點50分，山友說，當時氣溫零下4度，斷斷續續下起雪，有民眾中途就下山，後來收到留在山上的朋友拍的下雪影片。

“我就受不了。他們就說絕對會下雪。就是清晨的時候，我朋友就傳（下雪影片）給我。”

玉山北峰一樣成了銀白世界，雖然沒有雪深，還是成了冬日絕美景色。

海拔3000多公尺的嘉明湖山屋，中午也開始出現降雪，讓大批登山客又驚又喜。

週五清晨本島平地低溫，新北石碇只有10.1度，台中以北、東部、雲林山區也都出現12度以下低溫，馬祖甚至剩下9度。

“北方有冷空氣經過洋面上，所呈現雲階現象，各地天氣都偏冷。禮拜六之後，隨著冷氣團減弱，所以可以看到，整個溫度會有逐漸回升。

週六開始冷氣團慢慢減弱，溫度逐漸回升，中南部溫差大，下週二又將有下一波東北季風報到。

Foxtron to consolidate consumer EV business with Luxgen aquisition

Foxtron, a joint venture between Hon Hai and Yulon, has recently closed the deal to acquire all stakes in Yulon’s Luxgen car brand, for more than NT$780 million. In the same week after the announcement, Foxtron unveiled Bria, their very first consumer EV production model. Coupled with its existing OEM business, Foxtron is expected to make huge strides in the automobile sector. On the other hand, Yulon could give more weight to property development in the future.

A sleek red body and flashy rear lights. This is Bria, Foxtron’s first production electric vehicle model.

The Bria model comes in two specifications. The mid-range option has a rear-wheel drive that takes it from 0 to 100kph in 6.8 seconds; while the high-end four-wheel drive takes just 3.9 seconds. After many prototypes, Hon Hai is finally offering its very own consumer-level EV through the Foxtron brand, a joint venture with local car brand Yulon.

We often say that an EV is a computer on wheels. From that alone, Hon Hai has a good leverage, not to mention that they also do OEM for Japanese car brands. The relatively new company can therefore build a dual income stream through OEM and their own brand.

Yulon has recently agreed to transfer all assets from their Luxgen car brand to Foxtron, for a total of NT$787.6 million. The acquisition is expected to give Foxtron a consolidated chain of supply and distribution; whereas Yulon may see a shift in its business model.

Yulon actually isn’t so focused on automobiles anymore, which was where they started out. They’ve also lost their own car brand. Now that car manufacturing is no longer their core business, Yulon may shift their focus to construction and development.

Luxgen’s electric SUV introduced in 2022 and developed with Foxtron, the n7, will be the brand’s very last model should the deal follow through. Building upon Luxgen’s past success, Foxtron is ready to take on the consumer market.

Keelung to raise littering fine to NT$4,800 from 2026

Starting in the new year, Keelung is planning to raise the fine for littering from NT$3,600 to NT$4,800 in a bid to become a trash-free city. The head of the local environmental protection bureau said that cigarette butts are the most commonly littered item at an estimated 70% of the total. The bureau is therefore providing bags for smokers to put their butts in instead of throwing them on the ground.

When the garbage truck comes, it’s time to take out the trash. If everyone followed the rules and disposed of their garbage in trucks or cans, there wouldn’t be any issue. But of course, there are always people who don’t follow the rules. So Keelung decided that starting in the new year, it would raise fines for littering.

Starting on Jan. 1, 2026, Keelung is to raise the fine for littering from NT$3,600 to NT$4,800. Ma Chung-hao, director of the Keelung Environmental Protection Bureau, estimates that about 70% of littered items are cigarette butts, while the remaining 30% are trash, chewed betel nut, and other items.

Although cigarette butts appear small, they’re often the culprits behind clogged drains and sewer blockages. They also aren’t very biodegradable and contain numerous toxins. So we’re especially asking smokers to please not litter cigarette butts and instead collect them to throw away.

To help smokers avoid littering, the bureau is providing bags for cigarette butts that people can bring with them while out smoking.

Actress Moon Lee partners with chef to promote creative vegetarian dishes

As people become more health-conscious, vegetarian dishes are an increasingly common choice. Golden Bell-winning actress Moon Lee recently put on a cooking show with a chef, where the two made a fully vegetarian zucchini pasta with kumquat and peeled chili. By making creative dishes, they hope to transform people’s perceptions of vegetarian cuisine.

EY to petition for interpretation of opposition’s pension bill

Feuding between the Executive Yuan and opposition parties seems to have no end in sight. This time it’s over a pension reform plan initiated by former DPP president Tsai Ing-wen. The KMT and TPP recently used their majority to put a halt to Tsai’s cuts to pensions for the military, officials and teachers. But the government opposes the suspension, saying that it will strike a severe blow at the nation’s coffers. As the Constitutional Court has resumed operations, the Executive Yuan will countersign the bill and then immediately petition the constitutional court for an interpretation.

The opposition controlled Legislative Yuan has passed a bill halting a Tsai-era pension reform that the Executive Yuan planned to not promulgate. But now that the Constitutional Court is operating again, it’s taking a new approach.

The Executive Yuan has decided to countersign this bill but not put it into force. Instead it will file a petition for a constitutional interpretation. As for the option of requesting the legislature to reconsider the pension bill, as previous requests for reconsideration were never supported by opposition parties, the Executive Yuan has decided not to take this route.

Today is the deadline for the president to promulgate the anti-pension reform bill proposed by the Legislative Yuan. These anti-pension reform amendments violate Article 70 of the Constitution. However, since the Constitutional Court has resumed normal operations, after the president’s advisory document arrives, the Executive Yuan will fulfill its obligations and responsibilities. We will countersign the bill to allow it to take effect and immediately submit it to the Grand Justices for a constitutional interpretation.

Former DPP President Tsai Ing-wen promoted a pension reform with cuts that helped over NT$80 billion to be injected into the civil service retirement fund in recent years. The reforms also delayed the expected bankruptcy date from 2031 to 2050. Now that the KMT and TPP have joined forces to reverse the reform, the move is expected to have a serious impact on public finances, leaving the Executive Yuan with little choice but to respond.

The Constitutional Court has resumed operations, and we certainly expect it to act as the ultimate guardian of the people’s rights. It would be the most urgent task at hand to submit the pension reform case to the Constitutional Court for interpretation and to request a temporary injunction. As for whether and how to implement it, that needs to be discussed by the Executive Yuan, the Examination Yuan, the Ministry of Education, and even with local governments.

The opposition has tried to block the government’s pension reform. The Executive Yuan is now striking back.
