Taichung reveals giant Moomin inflatable for Central Taiwan Lantern Festival

Ahead of the Central Taiwan Lantern Festival’s opening on Feb. 15, Taichung unveiled that this year’s theme is to center around the popular Moomin characters. Among the seven major display zones, the main area at Civic Square is to feature a 21-meter-tall giant inflatable Moomin troll. Even the adorable handheld lanterns are of a Moomin riding a bike.

A giant 21-meter-tall inflated Moomin troll stands above Taichung’s Civic Square, his big round eyes peering over a blue scarf. It’s hard to miss, right in the center of the lawn.

The Central Taiwan Lantern Festival is to feature the popular Moomin characters as the theme of this year’s event.

For example, right here on Civic Square there’s a 21-meter Moomin troll, the tallest in Taiwan. Then over at Taichung Railway Station, HSR station, and Central Park, as well as Taichung Park and many, many other places, there will be similar installations.

Aside from the giant Moomin troll at Civic Square, Moomin characters can also be seen at Taichung Park, the railway station and other locations around the city. Even the small handheld lanterns include thoughtful details to symbolize the coming Year of the Horse. As Taichung boasts multiple bike paths, including the Green Skyway and Hou Feng Bike Path, the lantern also incorporates cycling elements.

Why did we choose Moomin for this year’s Lunar New Year? Because Finland has been named the happiest country in the world for eight years running. So happiness is our theme for this year.

Starting on Feb. 15, visitors to the Central Taiwan Lantern Festival will see their fill of the adorable Moomins, as Taichung hopes the characters will generate buzz and bring tourists to the city.

2026中台灣燈會，將在2月15日登場，台中市府今年和人氣IP"姆明一族"合作，除了有七大展區，在市民廣場還有高達21米的"巨型姆明"裝置搶先亮相。另外小提燈也以"姆明"融合鐵馬元素，萌度破表。

21公尺高的"巨型姆明"，圓滾滾大眼睛，圍著藍色圍巾，坐落在台中市民廣場，草皮正中央，吸引民眾目光。

今年中台灣燈會，找來人氣角色"姆明"，也就是大家熟悉的嚕嚕米，做為策展主題。

“那譬如說在我們的市民廣場，就有佈置全台灣最高，高達21公尺的姆明，嚕嚕米，那另外在台中火車站、高鐵站、在我們的中央公園，在我們的台中公園，還有很多很多的場地，也都會做相關的佈置。”

除了市民廣場的巨型姆明，在台中公園、火車站等地，也能看到姆明特色裝置，就連小提燈也藏有小巧思，響應馬年到來，加上台中市擁有綠空廊道、后豐鐵馬道多條自行車道，小提燈特地加入了鐵馬元素。

“我們今年為什麼會選擇姆米、嚕嚕米當作我們的過年IP，因為芬蘭這個國家，第八年被世界組織，評選為世界上最幸福的國家，所以幸福就是我們今年的主題。”

中台灣燈會，將在2月15日點燈，超萌IP和小提燈搶先亮相，期盼能夠掀起話題，吸引目光，帶動觀光人潮。

In wintery Kinmen, migrant birds create a different kind of snowscape

Many Taiwanese are excited about the prospect of seeing snow in winter. Nearby Kinmen’s Yangming Lake, trees are powdered white. But this apparent snowscape has been created by droppings left by cormorants, which are migratory birds that winter in this southern outlying archipelago. Let’s find out more about this rare pseudo-snowscape.

As far as the eye can see, the treetops along this lake are blanketed in white, as if draped in a white veil. This misty snowscape is breathtaking. But how could it snow in Kinmen, which is at a low elevation and low latitude and where moisture is insufficient? People who see this are left scratching their heads.

It’s white and the entire scenery is beautiful, like a winter wonderland. It’s very rare and every time I see this, I find it spectacular.

Flocks of migratory birds circle overhead, foraging for food to get through the winter. What’s on the treetops isn’t snow, but rather droppings left by cormorants. Cormorants are large winter migratory birds that like to congregate in colonies. Every year starting in October, tens of thousands of cormorants migrate south to Kinmen to spend the winter, returning north the following March. Because Kinmen is the largest wintering ground for cormorants in East Asia, with tens of thousands wintering there, the sheer number of birds and their abundant droppings creates this unique spectacle.

Actually, this is their roosting ground. At around 7 a.m. they gradually head to the sea area between Xiamen and Kinmen to feed. Around 4 p.m., they start to slowly fly back to their roosting spots. What you are seeing on the trees is their droppings from when they land and roost.

This phenomenon isn’t unique to Kinmen. It’s also in the Aogu Wetlands and Forest Park in Dongshi in Chiayi County. Although it’s not real snow, it can still fool you from a distance and make you feel the romance of winter.

Milkfish keeps twitching hours after deboning, drying in sun

Would you believe that even after a fish has been caught, brought ashore, killed, and sliced open, it will still keep twitching? A man in Tainan recently left a fish out to dry. But even after it had been gutted and left in the sun for over two hours, it kept trembling, frightening the village chief so much that he tossed it back where it came from. But experts said it was likely just a chemical reaction that caused the muscles to continue twitching long after the fish had died.

After catching it, I chilled it in an ice bucket for over 10 hours. Then even after killing it and sun-drying for two hours, it still kept twitching. It’s creepy!

Even when filming it for two minutes straight, the muscle never stopped its rhythmic twitching, frightening the man who got it.

After rubbing it in salt, I left it to dry in the sun for about two hours already. When I came over to flip them over, I saw that this one was still moving. I thought it was strange. It looked weird. I’ve never seen anything like this before. So after saying a few words for that fish, I released it.

The village chief often catches fish and brings them home to dry out. But this milkfish, even after catching it, gutting it, and drying it over a half day, even leaving it in the sun for over two hours, the muscles kept twitching like it was still alive. Scared to keep preparing it to eat, he dropped it back into the water.

To keep the skin intact, we first electrocute them in the bucket before submerging them in ice water. This prevents the nerves from relaxing. After warming up in the sun, the nerves relax, causing them to twitch.

After an organism dies, calcium continues to be released. That calcium then binds with thick filament, specifically troponin, triggering a pulling action. So it’ll result in that kind of pulsating motion you see here.

Experts say the movement likely was because of a chemical reaction that happened after the fish died. But that didn’t stop this bizarre phenomenon from capturing people’s imagination.

Famous seafood stall strives to revitalize night market

You can’t speak of Taichung’s night markets without mentioning the Zhonghua Road Night Market, which has been bustling since the 1960s and 70s. Among the market’s impressive array of delicious food vendors, one is famous for its fried crab and shrimp, as well as its variety of stir-fried dishes. The owner also serves as chair of the vendors’ association, working hard to restore the night market to its former glory.

A chef fries crab legs and shrimp in a sizzling pot of oil. He adds fresh basil and flash-fries the ingredients with the practiced skill of many years.

After seasoning with black pepper, chili pepper, and a special blend of spices, this piping hot seafood dish is ready to serve.

- It’s very flavorful. The fried garlic is especially tasty.

- Their spices have a unique flavor and tastes great with garlic.

- I’ll buy it whenever I’m passing by. The crab is fried on the spot and has lots of meat.

All kinds of fresh seafood are on display at this food stall, which has been satisfying customers at Taichung’s Zhonghua Road Night Market for over 20 years.

For stir-fried dishes we mainly use shacha sauce, and for fried dishes we mainly use salt and pepper. The ingredients must be fresh, and the oil must be new. We insist on this.

Liao makes sure that his food is of the highest quality, even if it is only a roadside stall. Witnessing the night market’s highs and lows over the last few decades, he is committed to restoring it to its former glory.

40th Golden Disc Awards, the best of K-pop at Taipei Dome

The 40th Golden Disc Awards from South Korea was held at the Taipei Dome last Saturday. Though it’s not the first time South Korea’s Golden Disc Awards were held outside its home country, fans of K-pop in Taiwan could finally watch the ceremony without traveling abroad. As the host country, Taiwan’s biggest star also got to present awards to the winners, including popular actor Greg Hsu and Mandopop queen Jolin Tsai. The awards ceremony itself was the best of the best in K-pop today, leaving fans buzzing with excitement.

The members of top K-pop girl group IVE perform their self-love anthem as cheerleaders, together with a squad of 22 dancers, driving the crowd wild.

Another top act LE SSERAFIM performs their earworm, dressed in an enticing, vibrant red. A member, Sakura then showed up with an unconventional prop, a bicycle and rode across the stage. But wait, there’s more.

Top newcomer CORTIS’ show was a serious workout on treadmills, to the awe of screaming fans. This is the 40th Golden Disc Awards ceremony from South Korea, honoring the best in K-pop today. Held in Taipei this year, Taiwanese celebs also shared the limelight.

Yes, TWS proves that coquettishness isn’t just for certain genders. But also not just for K-pop performers, as demonstrated by actor Greg Hsu on the front row. Though he probably needs some more practice, he still delivered for the most part. Hsu is one of the host country award presenters, and so is the headline-grabbing Jolin Tsai.

Small parties criticize Taipei for making school meals free

Taipei recently proposed making school lunches free of charge for all in the city, prompting many other counties and cities to follow suit. But several small political parties say that the program is just a vote-buying scheme by Mayor Chiang Wan-an. Critics say that it’s prompted other local leaders to follow Taipei blindly, without taking the reality of the situation and finances into account. They say that if local governments fully cover the cost of meals, the budget allocation will be locked in, which in the future could lead to lower quality as prices rise. Let’s hear more.

Free things are the most expensive. It’s not that parents don’t need subsidies. It’s that free meals for all without any supporting measures will lead to declining quality, increased waste and resource hoarding. These policies are very appealing in an election year, but children’s health shouldn’t be a campaign tool.

A candidate for Taipei’s City Council says that there is precedent for their concerns. In, 2021 a school lunch food safety controversy erupted in Yilan. Quality declined, food waste surged, and even food poisoning incidents were reported after free lunch policies were implemented. She called for a more comprehensive oversight system and urged the swift passage of legislation to ensure children’s health and safety.
