Reckless SUV driver turns Taichung roads into late-night drift track

A reckless driver turned the streets of Taichung into his own private late-night drift track, performing donuts at multiple busy intersections over a distance of at least 10 km. Dashcam footage from stunned motorists shows the same grey SUV spinning through junction after junction, leaving behind tire marks and shocked witnesses. Police are looking for the driver, who is facing multiple fines across jurisdictions and a potential license plate suspension.

Over at a different intersection, that SUV pulled off the same trick, this time crossing over two lanes. The driver clearly thinks the roads are his private drift track, and other road users are left scrambling to keep a distance. Less than 5 minutes later… yet another repeat at a different intersection.

As everyone waits for the green light, the grey SUV does, one, two, three donuts in the middle, then pedal to the metal and off he goes again.

Tire marks are visible at the intersections. The reckless driver took to the streets at 1 in the early hours of Monday. The driver set off from Taiwan Boulevard, performing donuts at the intersections in Xiangshang, Xitun, Xinxing and Henan.

The driver could face a maximum fine of NT$36,000 and have the vehicle’s license plate suspended for six months. Since he posed a serious danger to other road users, the driver may also be investigated on suspicion of endangering public safety. We will notify the vehicle owner to report to the police as soon as possible.

Police say the driver committed traffic violations across multiple jurisdictions, meaning the fines and penalties can be stacked. Fortunately, no crashes were reported. Police are working to identify the person behind the wheel and prevent innocent road users from being put at risk.
