Kaohsiung uses smart sensors to detect falling roadside trees

2026-08-03

To prevent roadside trees from falling down and causing damage, the Kaohsiung Public Works Bureau has installed smart monitors on the trunks that can keep track of tilt angles, tipping off a potential accident before it ever happens.

A brown plastic box recently appeared on this tree trunk. It’s actually a sensor that can provide great protection for passing pedestrians, despite its small size.

- From street surveys, we’ve found some medium-risk trees.

Staff sitting in the office can use their computers to monitor the trees in real time. To prevent collapse, the Kaohsiung Public Works Bureau first set up 380 tilt monitors at key points along major thoroughfares. If the angle exceeds 2.5 degrees, personnel are immediately dispatched to check.

Chen Kuan-wen
Kaohsiung Parks Office official
If there’s a relatively severe tilt detected, the device can quickly transmit a notification to our staff.

If an abnormality is detected, the city can quickly go address it by trimming branches or anchoring the tree to keep it from falling. If there’s no way to correct it, cutting it down is also an option.

Chuang Chieh-jen
Forest City Association chair
This approach is much more precise than relying on the naked eye, so I think it’s quite good.

Feels safer
Since it can monitor when a tree is tilting and give an early warning, I think it makes it much safer for people.

Trees that are unhealthy or unstable are at risk of falling. Using this system ensures that any potential dangers can be tracked in real time and handled quickly. The city plans to keep expanding the system in the future to ensure the public’s safety.
