New Red Line station on Taipei MRT to open on Aug. 30

The Taipei Metro’s Red Line is about to get longer, after more than 10 years of construction. The extra track section on Taipei’s Xinyi District has been granted an operation permit by the transport ministry. It will open to the public on Aug. 30. Let’s hear from the mayor of Taipei.

The eastern extension of the Red Line was one of the most challenging metro sections ever, due to the complex geology of the ground and the challenges that arose during construction. I am extremely thankful to the construction team, the administrative team in the city government and all partners who assisted in the completion of the line extension. The Ministry of Transportation and Communications issued the operating permit on the 18th. Thank you. I would hereby like to announce that the additional station will officially be open to the public on Aug. 30, and to celebrate we will launch several promotional campaigns.

The Red Line will extend 1.4km past Xiangshan Station along Section 6 of Xinyi Road, all the way to the Guangci Bo’ai Park. The final station will be Guangci/Fengtian Temple Station. The depth of the tunnels reaches almost 10 stories underground, making it one of the most challenging metro construction sections. To celebrate the completion of the project, Taipei will hold promotional campaigns including lucky draws with the chance to win round-trip tickets to London and Tokyo.

歷經10年工程，台北捷運信義線東延段完工，已經在18日獲得交通部審核通過，核發營運許可。台北市長蔣萬安今天親自宣布，將在08/30正式通車。

“捷運信義東延段，是史上最艱困的捷運路段之一，因為他面對的是非常複雜的地質，以及各項施工的困難，所以非常感謝整個施工團隊，市府團隊，以及所有參與協助信義東延段完成的夥伴同仁，前天也就是18號，終於收到交通部所核發的營運許可，非常感謝，也跟大家正式宣布，8月30號信義東延段正式通車，我們也會推出各項的優惠方案”

北捷信義線東延段從象山站，沿著信義路六段延伸至廣慈博愛園區，並增設終點站「廣慈/奉天宮站」，全長約1.4公里，開挖深度將近地下十層，號稱「史上最艱困」的捷運施工路段之一。慶祝通車，市府也將辦活動，有機會抽出倫敦、東京來回機票。

Republican Senator says she’s ‘not that informed’ on Taiwan

A Republican Senate candidate in South Carolina is facing a political firestorm after giving a startling answer about Taiwan and the South China Sea in a recent televised debate. Darline Graham, who stepped into her late brother Lindsey Graham’s Senate seat, was asked whether the issues are tied to US national security. She admitted she simply wasn’t informed in the subject. Her opponent immediately pounced, while critics questioned whether the political newcomer has the experience to hold the seat.

Earlier this summer, US Senator for South Carolina Lindsey Graham died, leaving his seat to his younger sister, Darline Graham. But with an election coming up, she’s had to justify her appointment ahead of the Republican Party’s runoff vote. In a debate on Wednesday, she showed her ignorance of cross-strait issues.

Before his death, Graham visited Taiwan on three occasions and touted himself as an expert on diplomacy and national security. He even promoted pro-Taiwan bills and was seen as a close ally of Taiwan, making his sister’s reply especially shocking. One day later, she accepted a TV interview to try and stop the criticism.
