It seems like dog and cat cafes are everywhere these days. But in Taichung, there’s a new spot that’s going for something a bit more exotic. Instead of dogs and cats, customers can dine alongside meerkats, frogs, insects, and lizards. But the owner confessed that it was difficult to get the idea off the ground.
Knowing exactly where the treats are, two adorable meerkats bolt over to climb on our delighted reporter’s lap.
The curious creatures poke around, even coming right up to the camera lens. But that’s not the only animal kingdom represented here.
This is an exotic pet restaurant in Taichung’s West District. Here, customers have a chance to dine alongside meerkats, chameleons, frogs, insects, lizards big and small, and more.

Dog and cat cafes are common, but this is the first restaurant in Taiwan to feature exotic animals. As there was no precedent to follow, the founder said it was difficult getting started.

Pets have natural odors, while food service has strict sanitation requirements. Striking a balance between the two took a massive effort. And on top of that, animal protection laws have evolved in recent years. It requires constant adjustments on our end.
It’s crucial to keep a suitable living space for the animals, as well as a sanitary dining environment. Caring for over 40 species gathered under one roof poses an even greater challenge.

Some are from deserts, some from forests, and others from riverbanks. We want to provide an environment that mimics their natural habitats. It can also serve as a reference for other pet owners.
The founder said the animals take “shifts,” with regular breaks. By opening Taiwan’s first exotic pet restaurant, they hope it can introduce more people to these charming and unique animals.

現在狗狗、貓咪咖啡廳，到處都有，不過在台中，就有一家，特殊寵物餐廳，店裡有狐獴、蛙類、昆蟲、不同種蜥蜴等各類特寵，在座位旁陪著你用餐。不過業者也坦言，在開店過程中，遇到不少挑戰。
兩隻小可愛，知道哪有食物，直接暴衝，親人的跳上腳，記者真的快被牠們融化。
好奇的探頭探腦，時不時還會貼上鏡頭，而在店裡接客的小動物們，還有這些。
這裡是台中西區一家特殊寵物餐廳，從狐獴、變色龍、蛙類、昆蟲，一直到大小隻，不同種蜥蜴，這裡通通都有，直接陪在顧客身旁用餐。

“覺得很有趣啊，一來就看到外面會有鳥，還有蛇，還會想那是不是假的。”

“家裡不能養，又想了解的話，來這邊就可以體驗看看。”
貓咪狗狗咖啡廳，全台到處都有，但特殊寵物餐廳，這裡是全台第一家，正因為在這之前，沒有案例可以參考，負責人也說，開設過程中，的確遇到不少挑戰。

“寵物的話是有牠的味道，那餐飲的話又需要整潔，在這中間做平衡，其實我們花費蠻多心思，再加上近年也很多動物保護相關法律，會需要一直去做調整修改。”
動物生活環境和食安衛生達到平衡，十分重要，超過40種的小動物們，齊聚一堂，該怎麼照護，更是一大難題。

“有些是沙漠來的，有些是森林來的，有些是溪流邊的。我們會希望提供一個符合他們的原生環境的樣子，也讓其他飼主可以有一個參考空間。”
負責人強調，小動物們採"輪班制"，都會定期休息，也希望自己開的這家特寵餐廳，能讓更多人，知道這些動物迷人、可愛之處。
