Taiwan’s first pet-friendly library allows dog reading companions

The Yumin branch of the New Taipei City Public Library in Xinzhuang is the country’s first pet-friendly library. You just have to apply for a special card, and on the last Sunday of every month, your furry companion can join you for a day of reading. Although it’s only open to dogs for now, they hope to open to other kinds of animals soon. Nearly 100 pets have already gotten their cards, and the number is quickly growing.
A visitor walks into a library, a dog by their side. Here, it’s not only people who can get library cards. Pets can also get a special card to accompany their humans as they read.
With just a photo and proof of vaccination, this adorable Labrador A-chiao got his card right away. The Xinzhuang Yumin branch of the New Taipei City Public Library is the country’s first pet-friendly library. On the last Sunday of every month, patrons are welcome to bring their pets.

Dogs are the pet that’s most commonly brought outside the home, so we first opened to dogs. In the future, we might pair with holidays or hold special events to invite different kinds of pets.
Over 10 years, nearly 100 pets have signed up. At the moment it’s only open to dogs, but they hope to welcome more kinds of pets in the future. For those concerned about their dog’s behavior, there’s also an area set aside where they can move around and drink water.

We hope that dog companions can help children who have just learned to walk or might have trouble reading develop an interest in books.
The library also sometimes organizes an event where they bring in a companion dog to give children without a pet at home someone to read to.

We can’t have a dog in our apartment, but here there’s a chance to interact with dogs and let the kids understand them better.
Bringing pets into the library not only enlivens the space, but also gives book-loving pet owners another place to bring their furry friends.

新北市立圖書館新莊裕民分館，是全國首創寵物友善圖書館，只要幫寵物辦理「入館證」，每個月最後一個周日，就能帶著毛小孩，一同進入圖書館「陪讀」，雖然現階段只開放小狗入場，未來會視情況開放其他寵物，而寵物伴讀服務開辦至今，已經有近百隻毛小孩，申辦入館證，陸續還在增加中。
牽著毛小孩，進到圖書館，不只民眾可辦借書證，就連自家寵物，也能辦理入館證，陪同主人伴讀。
自備相片以及相關疫苗證明，可愛的拉不拉多「阿巧」，立刻擁有一張專屬入館證，新北市立圖書館新莊裕民分館，為全國首創寵物友善圖書館，每個月的最後一個禮拜天，開放寵物進場"陪讀"。

“帶毛小孩出門目前是以狗狗為最大宗，所以我們目前是開放狗狗入館。之後我們有時候會搭配節慶，或是說動物主題日，會開放不同的寵物入館”
開辦十年來，取得入館證的毛小孩，已經快一百隻，現階段先開放小狗入場，其他寵物未來會視情況開放。就怕寵物情緒不穩定，還有專屬的休憩空間，讓牠們可以活動喝水消消氣。

圖書館不定期安排「汪汪故事屋」活動，提供狗醫生伴讀，一方面也讓沒有養寵物的小朋友，擁有傾聽對象。

“因為我們公寓沒辦法養狗，所以在這邊反而有機會可以接觸到狗狗，他們小孩子也可以多一些認識”
透過寵物的加入，不但活化圖書館使用空間，更讓想看書的狗主人，多了一個不一樣的遛狗選擇。
