Hualien Station’s new management team includes father-daughter duo

Hualien Railway Station recently got a new station master with over 30 years of experience, Cheng Cheng-chung. Among the nine deputy station masters is his daughter, Cheng Yu-chuan. This father-daughter duo working together to run the station certainly makes for a good story.

Her intent focus on the train as it enters Hualien Station shows the dedication deputy station master Cheng Yu-chuan has to her job. The station recently got a new chief. He just so happens to also be her father.

Cheng Cheng-chung has over 30 years of experience working with Taiwan Railway. He was promoted from Taitung Station chief to take over as master of Hualien Station, where he can work side-by-side with his daughter.

My daughter learned all about Taiwan Railway when growing up through osmosis. I said I brainwashed and bribed her to stay in Hualien.

I think on the one hand, I’m happy and proud of his achievements. But on the other hand, I feel a lot of pressure. I hope that I can stay on my toes. He’ll keep a closer watch over my work.

After retiring from the military, Cheng senior took the railways exam and started working at Hualien Station in 1991. He made his way up the ranks to deputy station master and station officer, and in 2022 became master of Taitung Station. His daughter started working at Taiwan Railway in 2017.

My support is also a challenge and adds stress. Support means I can exchange experiences with her. The challenge or stress is that no matter how well she does, people will always say that she leaned on her father. But that’s not true. She works very hard.

Cheng is proud of his daughter. He also hopes to incorporate some younger perspectives and keep open communication to spark new ideas. The mutual understanding they share will certainly lead to some positive changes for Hualien Station.

台鐵花蓮站日前舉行站長交接，新任站長鄭成忠，在台鐵服務超過30年，特別的是，9名副站長中，有一位竟然是他的親生女兒鄭妤涓。父女倆擔任正副站長，傳為佳話。

眼神專注認真，緊盯進站列車，台鐵花蓮站副站長鄭妤涓一刻不鬆懈，不過，近日來了新站長，身分相當特別，竟然是她的父親。

在台鐵服務超過30年的鄭成忠，從台東站長調升為新任花蓮站長，父女檔合作共事，也成為台鐵佳話。

鄭成忠退伍後參加台鐵特考，1991年到花蓮站報到，陸續接任副站長、站務主任，2022年到擔任台東站長，而女兒鄭妤涓在2017年加入台鐵行列。

鄭成忠以女兒為榮，也說，希望加入年輕人的思維，能互相交流激盪出新火花，相信彼此的好默契，定能為花蓮站帶來不一樣的變化。

Aprroching Typhoon Ragasa intensifies rafting competition

Typhoon Ragasa has now made its way to Southern Taiwan, affecting a National Games competition held in the north. Despite the heavy rain, a whitewater rafting competition in Yilan went on as usual. The heavy rainstorms have toppled an entire row of tents for spectators. As with those that are still in place, people are holding on to the metal bars to try and keep them in place.

A quick glance shows that at least six tents were already toppled and fallen into the fields, leaving spectators no choice but to retrieve them and prop them up again.

The whitewater rafting competition on Monday took place on Annong River in Yilan’s Sanxing Township. The heavy rainstorm brought in by the typhoon’s periphery was a challenge for participants, organizers and spectators alike. It had to be paused many times throughout the game.

During the competition, when the wind gets too strong or the rain gets too heavy, the organizer will pause. The tents over there got blown into the field. That area happened to be where the judges are. The competition was concluded in the end, but there were some delays.

Fortunately, no one was injured during the game, which ended successfully. It’s clearly a memorable afternoon for everyone present.

NSTC introduces Taiwanese-speaking robot, promotes tech education

Taiwan’s technological prowess is world-renowned. Taiwan High Speed Rail launches quiet cars to increase comfort

Chatting on the phone or listening to music without headphones is now forbidden on some train cars on the High Speed Rail. The quiet car policy launched on Monday for a three-month trial period. Passengers who are too noisy will be given a warning, and if they continue to make a racket, they could be refused admission. A Japanese report says the rules are even stricter than Japan’s.

Inside the train, it’s as quiet as a library. Conversations are kept at a whisper. This is how silent it gets in the HSR’s new quiet cars.

Signs remind passengers to keep quiet. Phones have to be put on silent mode. And wearing earphones to watch videos and listen to music is mandatory. Last week a tour group from overseas caused an uproar for being noisy on the train. According to Japanese media, the HSR’s quiet car rules are even stricter than Japan’s.

Villagers scared witness by hundreds of fish hung in darkness

A villager in Changhua had a fitting experience marking the end of Ghost Month on Sunday night, when they saw what appears to be hundreds of owls glaring at them in the darkness. It turns out the “owls” were milkfish cut open in half and hung up to air-dry overnight, a method of preserving fish known as “ichiya-boshi.” The fish were being prepared at the village chief’s yard, which he had recently introduced to local fish farmers. To be fair, they do resemble owls from a distance. Take a look for yourself.

They were like, “Oh my goodness! Why are there so many owls?” They kept yelling, “Help! Help! Owls!” I was like, “Stop acting like a crazy person, ok?” But they were convinced that what they saw were owls. To be honest, it did also look like owls to me at a glance.

The village chief admits that the hung fish do look like owls in the darkness, and says that he can see why his visitor got frightened.

The eyes do glow when headlights shine against them. That’s why they thought I had many owls at my place.

The villager breathed a sigh of relief when they found out what scared them weren’t owls, but fish left to hang dry overnight.

This method of preserving fish is “ichya-boshi,” meaning “dried overnight” in Japanese. The fish is cut open and gutted, then soaked in a 10:1 briny water and left to air-dry overnight. This results in chewier flesh and a saltier flavor. Fish commonly used for ichya-boshi include the fourfinger threadfin, the large yellow croaker and the Okhotsk Atka mackerel. Fubao villagers started making milkfish ichiya-boshi to preserve their farmed milkfish.

It smells and tastes just like freshly caught fish, and it tastes even better with a dash of lemon juice.

Fubao Village, located in Changhua’s Fuxing Township is also commonly referred to as the dairy cow village for being the largest daily producer in Taiwan. Milkfish is also farmed in the village. The village chief had fish farmers learn how to make ichiya-boshi to prevent losses due to milkfish freezing to death over the winter. The village chief’s visitor was probably not yet aware of the practice, so they thought they saw hundreds of glaring owls. To their relief, it turned out to be dried milkfish instead.
