2 Keelung institutions still have effigies of Taiwan’s late dictator

As Taiwan democratized over the last few decades, statues of the late dictator Chiang Kai-shek were gradually removed from public spaces. But two institutions in Keelung have still got Chiang statues. One is at the shipyard of Taiwan’s state-run CSBC Corporation and there are no plans to remove it. The other is at Dingnei Elementary School, where teachers use it to teach students about Taiwan’s history.
The last remaining statue of Chiang Kai-shek in Keelung stands at the entrance of the CSBC Corporation’s shipyard.
It portrays Chiang wearing a long robe and holding a staff, and it’s corroded at the bottom. The phrase “Forever Remembering our Leader” is engraved at the base. Authorities at the shipyard say they have no plans to modify it or move it. Previously the national flag would be raised in this square.
DPP Councilor Jiho Chang argues that in Taiwan’s democratic era, only individuals or private groups should commemorate political leaders. But land belonging to state-owned enterprises should be used more efficiently, than by erecting statues. Keelung’s Dingnei Elementary School also has a Chiang statue: a golden bust on a stone pillar.

We don’t let it affect the overall look of the school, or the students’ spaces. It’s a bit like the historical marks left by the Vietnam War. Everyone grief and memories are part of the history. We think it’s best to not have any text on it.
The principal says historical suffering must be remembered, and the bust is a good teaching material that can be used to tell students about Taiwan’s dark past.

基隆市剩唯一列管蔣介石銅像 放置台船廠內

基隆市目前僅存一座列管的蔣介石銅像，目前矗立在台船基隆廠內，已經有46年的歷史。但台船暫無移置計畫。有民進黨議員主張，國營事業的土地應更有效利用，不必保留，國民黨強調尊重歷史。至於校園銅像多已移置，不過碇內國小裡面，還有一個不到半身的蔣介石銅像，而且被漆成金色。
基隆最後一座蔣介石銅像，還矗立在台灣基隆廠入口處。
這座蔣介石銅像穿著長袍、手裡拿著長棍，銅像底部有點鏽蝕，基座正面刻著「永懷領袖」四個字。台船基隆廠表示，會保持原樣，沒有計畫要移置銅像。有員工說，早期還要在這處廣場升旗。
台船沒有移置銅像的打算，民進黨議員張之豪主張，民主時代，對於紀念所謂領導、偉人的行為應回歸到個人或團體，國營事業土地要更有效率使用，不需要浪費空間矗立銅像。其實不只這裡，基隆的碇內國小，也有一個不到半身的蔣介石銅像，放置在石柱上，而且被改噴為金色。

“不要影響到整個門面，不要影響到學生的活動空間、場域。早期都會像越戰有這樣的一個歷史印記嘛，大家傷心的傷心，回憶的回憶，就是一段歷史，所以我們就想說，不立文字。”
校長說要接受與承認歷史已發生的苦痛，銅像也是教材，老師可透過銅像講述這段歷史。
