Reports have recently cropped up that a Chinese budget airline is refusing to sell tickets to Taiwanese passport holders. The carrier in question is Spring Airlines, and online, commenters suspected that it might be nationalistic move by the company to take a hard line on Taiwan. On Monday, the company’s top representative came out to announce that that was not the case.
The whole rumor started after a Taiwanese passport holder received a message saying that their purchase of a ticket had failed. The text said that starting Sept. 12, Taiwan passports issued by the ROC would not be valid, and that they would only accept those issued by the PRC. According to the company representative, that was just a system error due to a recent technical upgrade. The sales system has since returned to normal, and the customer service department says the incident was not a political statement.
