Man organizes ultra triathlon to promote Mazu faith worldwide

The 2025 Taiwan Ultra Triathlon is to be held from Nov. 9 to 23 in Tainan, marking Asia’s first 226x10 extreme super triathlon. The man behind the event is ultra triathlete Tsai Ming-yi. As it’s his first time hosting an event like this, Tsai said there are many challenges. But to bring Mazu faith to the world while also introducing ultra sports to Taiwan, Tsai has overcome all obstacles. With the support of his deity, Tsai is writing an extraordinary new chapter in the history of triathlons in Taiwan.

Holding the national flag aloft, Taiwanese ultra triathlete Tsai Ming-yi runs his hardest through this neighborhood, where nighttime temperatures dip to 8 degrees. In September, he went to Milan in Italy to participate in an ultra triathlon. It’s 30 times the distance of a regular triathlon, covering 6,780km.

Over many years, Tsai has completed more than 60 ultra triathlons spurred by his belief in the power of physical strength, endurance, willpower, the national flag, and his faith in Mazu. Rain or shine, the power of his faith has enabled him to overcome difficulties time and again. Now, he has decided to hold Asia’s first-ever ultra triathlon in Taiwan.

「2025台灣極限超級鐵人賽」11月9日至23日在台南登場，這也是亞洲第一場的226×10極限鐵人活動。幕後的推手，就是台灣極限鐵人蔡明宜。第一次籌辦這樣的活動，蔡明宜坦言，真的是困難重重，不過為了把媽祖信仰推向全世界，也把極限鐵人運動引進台灣，蔡明宜關關難過關關過，靠著媽祖撐腰，正在書寫台灣極限鐵人運動的不凡歷史！

高舉國旗，來自台灣的超級鐵人阿伯蔡明宜，在晚上最低只有8度的街區奮力奔跑，去年9月，蔡明宜遠赴義大利米蘭，挑戰極限鐵人三項，賽事是一般鐵人三項的30倍距離，共計6780公里。

Residents down Matai’an barrier lake evacuated ahead of Typhoon Fung-Wong

A red alert has been issued for the Matai’an Creek barrier lake in Hualien, which overflowed last time a typhoon hit, leaving Guangfu Township heavily flooded. On Monday morning, after the red alert was issued, the Hualien County Government immediately suspended classes and work locally, and began to evacuate residents at several townships, including Guangfu.

A public announcement urges residents to evacuate as it rains. Locals of Guangfu Township in Hualien are taken to a temporary shelter set up at a primary school. As Typhoon Fung-Wong approaches, a red alert has been placed on the Matai’an Creek barrier lake, and those in the affected area are asked to evacuate.

Classes and work are only called off for the day in the morning even though the county government expected, on the day prior that a red alert would be issued for the barrier lake. What took them so long?

We could only announce work and class suspensions in the Guangfu region after receiving an official notice from the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency that a red alert has been issued.

After the last disastrous typhoon, the county government seems not to be taking any chances. This time, on top of using the loudspeakers, police officers and village chiefs also knocked on every door to make sure everyone followed the order to evacuate. Even the county commissioner was already chairing the disaster response center at eight in the morning, making sure that all measures are implemented thoroughly.

Pingtung park offers condemned Mercedes for children to draw on

A car show was held recently at a Japanese-era historical park in Pingtung County’s Chaozhou Township. But the most popular part of the show wasn’t all the classic cars on display. It was two white sedans open for the public to graffiti. Kids took up markers to draw all over the cars until they were completely covered. Their parents watching on the sidelines couldn’t help but worry that their car might get an unwelcome paint job when they get home.

But this isn’t at home, where they’d definitely be in for a scolding. If you look around, there are many other marker-wielding kids drawing on the white car until it’s completely covered in doodles.

It’s an old joke. A teacher gives a student a piece of paper and asks them to draw a car. They wanted them to draw on the paper. But the kid draws on his dad’s car, and gets punished. It’s fulfilling a childhood dream.

Using these references for the event turned out to be a huge success. The Chaozhou Township Office in Pingtung worked with a car modification club to host a car show at the township’s Japanese-era historical park. Turns out that the most popular part was these two scrapped Mercedes. Over two days, 14 drawing sessions were held of 20 participants each, meaning that 280 people drew on the cars in total. Registration filled up as soon as it opened.

Last year there was only one car with 140 slots available. But due to demand, we got another this year.

The kids had a great time doodling all over the cars. But their parents watching from the sidelines couldn’t help but feel a little worried.

School creates a hospital for fixing toys run by retirees and students

Sick children get to see doctors, so why not sick toys? Jong-Bu Elementary School in Taoyuan has set up a “toy hospital,” where retired engineers, Taipower employees and plumbers with an average age of over 70 wear white coats and pretend to be doctors as they repair the students’ broken toys. Joining their ranks are some of the schools’ own students. In just four short months, they’ve all successfully repaired as many as 200 toys. Let’s find out more.

Wearing white coats, picking up screwdrivers and carefully removing and inspecting parts, these polished and skillful older adults are toy doctors.

The white-coated doctors that are so diligently repairing the toys are retired engineers and plumbers with an average age of over 70. They work at a “toy hospital” founded by Jong-Bu Elementary School in Taoyuan. The school has trained older adults in hands-on toy repair courses. They work with the school’s students to fix broken toys.

It contains batteries, motors, speakers, and circuit boards, so it could cause considerable damage to the environment.

The “toy hospital” has been specially set up for sick toys. Any toys with hard-to-treat diseases can submit a consultation form and be taken to the waiting room. In just four short months, the toy doctors have successfully repaired over 200 toys with a weight of 50kg. They’ve also disassembled more than 150kg of toys for reuse.

It’s especially suitable for the older adults because they enjoy it so much that there’s almost no need for nursing homes. It’s very helpful for people in their golden years because you’re using your hands as well as your brain.

The opportunity for grandparents and children to work together and share this kind of family-style, emotionally-rich education is also an important part of life education. It teaches us how to cherish toys and take care of them.

People in the community have been mobilized so that both older adults with specialized skills and children trained in toy repair can take part. It is because of this group of toy doctors, young and old, that toys that were about to be thrown away are given a second chance at life.

Temple’s public broadcast system key part of local communication

An influencer named RJ unexpectedly discovered a public broadcast system when filming at Fuling Temple in Chiayi’s Dongshi Township. By putting in just NT$30, anyone can use the system to make a one-minute announcement that can be heard up to a kilometer away. RJ joked that people could use this to chat or sing a song, but temple officials said residents use it to look for people and sell things, and that visitors looking to use it to sing would likely be prohibited.

RJ the influencer is a little shy while greeting the temple’s neighbors through its public broadcast system. He came to Fuling Temple in Chiayi’s Dongshih Township to film and was surprised to find that he could make public announcements here.

By putting just NT$30 into the machine, anyone can make an announcement for the surrounding community to hear. After RJ’s public greeting, some fans of his even came to find him.

Old temples have this. If there’s something going on in the temple or the surrounding community, we’ll announce it. The entire village, two to three hundred households, can all hear it, because there are over 20 speakers.

This public broadcast system has been around for over 50 years, and the 700 people living in the one-kilometer radius of the temple can all hear its announcements. The broadcast system plays a crucial role in the community.

People selling vegetables and fish will announce it to get people to come and buy their produce. If there are any public matters, we’ll also announce it.

The local community uses this to sell goods, find people, and make public announcements. But NT$30 only gets one minute of airtime, so it’s important to make the broadcast concise. Temple officials said it can only be used for important matters, not for singing or simply sharing opinions, as it might annoy people living nearby.

Michelin-recommend chef opens museum of Taiwan antiques

The chef of a Michelin-recommended restaurant in Tainan not only collects recipes, but also antiques. Over 15 years, he has collected thousands of old Taiwanese artifacts, from old bicycles, carts, and record players, to everyday household items. Visiting his home is like stepping into the past.

With this vintage lamp, antique signs, glass bottles, and sodas, coming here is like traveling back in time. This impressive antique collection belongs to the head chef of a Michelin-recommended restaurant.

The collector is none other than Chou Jung-tang, whose restaurant has been recommended by the Michelin guide for four consecutive years. When he isn’t making delicious food, he fills his time with collecting antiques.

All these things inspire nostalgia in us Taiwanese, so I just kept collecting and collecting. I always say it’s like having cancer. There’s no cure, and the more you collect, the more it grows.

These drawers play music when opened, which Chou says is an old anti-theft technique. This museum of Taiwanese artifacts has thousands of antiques, including many kinds of carts and daily essentials.
