Kaohsiung car crash kills Filipino man, leaves 8 others injured

A 50-year-old Filipino man was killed and eight other scooter drivers were injured in a traffic accident on Sunday in Kaohsiung. The crash happened when a car driven by a 73-year-old man made an illegal turn and cut off the scooter’s path. After the initial collision, car then swerved into a group of scooter riders waiting for the green light at the intersection.

Dashcam footage shows the moment of a deadly crash as a white car makes an illegal right turn. It blocks the path of a scooter going straight, resulting in the first crash. The car swerves away and loses control, running over a group of scooter riders waiting for the green light. The crash left 1 dead and 8 injured.

Another road user caught the aftermath of the crash, with scooters strewn over the floor, and injured riders sitting on the asphalt. A security camera caught the crash from another angle, when the car sends a scooter flying and its rider to the ground, barely escaping getting run over.

The 73-year-old car driver, surnamed Chen, says he wasn’t driving fast.

An investigation is underway, and the driver will face charges of negligent homicide.

The deceased is a 50-year-old man from the Philippines, who runs a small eatery in Nanzih with his wife.

His neighbors remember him as a hard worker who would often be on the road to deliver lunchboxes. His shop was closed on Sunday and he had headed out to get a haircut.

16日傍晚，高雄楠梓區一輛下橋的轎車，違規穿越雙白線右轉，撞上了直行的機車後，高速衝撞待轉格內的8輛機車，其中第一時間被撞上的機車騎士，緊急送醫後仍宣告不治，而待轉車格內8名騎士，也都受傷送醫。

民眾行車記錄器拍下，白色轎車下了高架陸橋後，駕駛直接穿過雙白線，往右邊的小巷開過去，撞上下橋直行的紅色機車，駕駛為了閃避，轎車卻失控，高速衝撞停在待轉區裡面的機車，最後釀成1死8傷的嚴重事故。

民眾目擊驚悚撞擊瞬間，路面上機車東倒西歪，還有騎士受傷坐在地上，從當時店家監視器就看到，轎車衝撞機車當下，一名騎士跌坐在地上，險些就要被轎車輾過，場面十分驚險。

第一時間，這名73歲的陳姓肇事駕駛聲稱自己沒有開很快。

“我沒有開很快，下橋後這邊很多人，這邊都是車，都是車，我要開往這邊過來。”

詳細肇因還有待調查，警方也將依過失致死將駕駛移送法辦。

在車禍中喪命的，是50歲林姓菲籍男子，他和妻子，在高雄楠梓區開了一間小吃店。

鄰居表示，死者工作很認真，經常外出送便當。週日小吃店沒有營業，他去剪頭髮，沒想到卻遇上車禍。

Mingli Village in Hualien covered in rocks after flooding by Fung-wong

Mingli Village in Hualien’s Wanrong Township was heavily flooded last week, when Tropical Storm Fung-wong caused the Matai’an Creek barrier lake to overflow again. A week later, the village is still heavily covered in rocky debris. The township head had discouraged the public to volunteer as shovel superheros, as they did for Guangfu Township earlier, citing safety concerns.

The entire house is clogged up by rocks of all sizes. That it’s uninhabitable is an understatement.

It’s the same in another residence. The Armed Forces are here to help victims retrieve important items and documents, first and foremost.

- I’m heartbroken. I don’t know how I’ll clean this up.

The exterior is also completely littered in debris. Excavators have been digging for days on end, and finally, some roads have reopened. The village landmark, a statue of a woman with facial tattoo, was also recovered.

From a bird’s eye view, the village is completely in grey, being buried under a thick layer of mud and rocks. Heavy machinery run back and forth to clean up.

The outer bands of Tropical Storm Fung-wong brought tremendous rainfall to Hualien and made the Matai’an Creek overflow again, this time affecting Mingli Village in Wanrong Township. Unlike in Guangfu Township last time, this time there were no “shovel superheroes.” The township head advised against volunteering due to safety concerns.

There aren’t as many residents here. But there are lots of large rocks. Lots. Behind us, a 2-km section of road from the 3km mark of Hualien County Road No. 45 to Mingli Village has been cleared and reopened.

The heavy machinery operator also says that it may take another four days for the cleanup to make meaningful progress. It’s been almost a week since the flooding but the road to recovery has only just begun.

Restaurant brings classic 17th century Dutch cuisine to Taiwan

When discussing the Netherlands, most people think of windmills and tulips. But do you know what Dutch cuisine is like? One local restaurant is offering a full Dutch menu of dishes straight from the 17th century, like beef stew with onions and mashed potato, and bitterballen. For dessert, try poffertjes with berries. Now you can taste the authentic flavors of the Netherlands without having to travel abroad.

Piping hot mashed potatoes are spread onto a plate, the chef using a spoon to create a well in the center for the beef stew. Add some frisee and parsley for garnish, and this classic dish—passed down from the 17th-century golden era of the Netherlands—is ready to serve. These bitterballen are also from that time. Minced beef and mashed potato are pressed together and fried into golden balls, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

Indian tour guide says local sites popular with Taiwanese

After the pandemic, tourism between Taiwan and India has skyrocketed alongside economic cooperation. The Tourism Administration is promoting special tours geared toward Indian travelers, while Taiwanese have been flocking to Indian destinations, especially the “golden triangle” of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. An FTV reporter recently traveled to Jaipur, where a tour guide said that Taiwanese have been some of the main visitors to the local historic sites.

From a Jeep you can see the streets of Jaipur—the largest city in northern India’s state of Rajasthan.

Right now we’re trying out a Jeep ride. The vehicle doesn’t have any seatbelts. Along the road we can see cows and the occasional elephant. We’re on our way to the Amber Fort.

Sharing the road with elephants and cows is nothing unusual here in Jaipur, an important trading hub in northern India.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan and India deepened their economic as well as tourism cooperation. Taiwan’s Tourism Administration encourages Indians to travel to Taiwan, while many Taiwanese are traveling to India, especially the “golden triangle” of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.

It’s common to see street vendors hawking souvenirs and handmade crafts to passing tourists. It’s also an important revenue source for the locals.
