Taipei MRT gate entrance sounds indicate traveler data

2025-11-17

The gates of the Taipei Metro always make a sound when people tap their card to enter the station. But they play different sounds for different people, as the gates are programmed with several sound and light signals depending on the ticket type and situation. For example, one sound indicates that the traveler’s card has less than NT$100 remaining.

When travelers tap their card to enter the Taipei Metro, the gates always make a sound. In fact, they can make several different sounds to indicate different situations.

Even those who take the metro every day may not have noticed that the gates make different sounds. For normal cards, student cards, and discounted cards, it always sounds like this.

It’s a clear, clean pitch that sounds once. But for senior citizen cards, there’s another element added.

It rings with the same tone, but for seniors, an orange light flashes up at the top and at the front of the gate.

If the gates play this “ding ding” sound, it means something is wrong. The light on top and at the front of the gate will also flash red, telling the traveler to talk to the customer service desk to solve the problem. There is also another sound that the gates make that is very helpful—if you know what it means.

If the gates play an upward-sliding pitch followed by two lower-pitched rings, it means that the card has a balance below NT$100, reminding the traveler to top up soon.

Commuter
I had no idea. Wow, thank you, I really didn’t know! This is the kind of knowledge I want to know, and I hope you will spread the word. I like this.

Commuter
The sound it makes when you have a low balance is a bit sharper. I usually top up my card regularly, so I don’t hear that sound very often.

Next time you’re riding the Taipei Metro, pay attention to the sound the gates make when you tap in. It might tell you something interesting!
