
Doctor and author Chen Yao-chang passed away from prostate cancer on Monday at the age of 76 at National Taiwan University Hospital. Chen was a leading figure in the field of hematology-oncology and his death is being mourned in the medical community. Among his students is the Minister of Health and Welfare, Shih Chung-liang, who became choked with emotion after learning about Chen’s passing. Let’s hear from him.

Chen practiced medicine at National Taiwan University Hospital for more than three decades and he performed Taiwan’s first-ever bone marrow transplant. He was the founding director of the NHRI’s Stem Cell Research Center. He was also director of NTU’s Graduate Institute of Forensic Medicine and promoted the passage of the Forensic Pathologist Act. After his retirement, Chen became an author of historical novels. Among his better known works is “Puppet Flower,” which won a literary award and was adapted into a TV series titled “Seqalu: Formosa 1867.”

陳耀昌在台大行醫三十多年,完成台灣首例骨髓移植,更是國衛院幹細胞中心的創所主任,也擔任台大「法醫學」研究所所長,曾推動"法醫師法"三讀通過。2014年退休後,晉身為作家,陸續撰寫「獅頭花」、「傀儡花」和「苦楝花」三本歷史小說,「傀儡花」不但獲得文學獎, 還翻拍成電視劇「斯卡羅」。
