Doctor and author Chen Yao-chang dies from prostate cancer aged 76

Doctor and author Chen Yao-chang passed away from prostate cancer on Monday at the age of 76 at National Taiwan University Hospital. Chen was a leading figure in the field of hematology-oncology and his death is being mourned in the medical community. Among his students is the Minister of Health and Welfare, Shih Chung-liang, who became choked with emotion after learning about Chen’s passing. Let’s hear from him.

Chen practiced medicine at National Taiwan University Hospital for more than three decades and he performed Taiwan’s first-ever bone marrow transplant. He was the founding director of the NHRI’s Stem Cell Research Center. He was also director of NTU’s Graduate Institute of Forensic Medicine and promoted the passage of the Forensic Pathologist Act. After his retirement, Chen became an author of historical novels. Among his better known works is “Puppet Flower,” which won a literary award and was adapted into a TV series titled “Seqalu: Formosa 1867.”

陳耀昌在台大行醫三十多年，完成台灣首例骨髓移植，更是國衛院幹細胞中心的創所主任，也擔任台大「法醫學」研究所所長，曾推動"法醫師法"三讀通過。2014年退休後，晉身為作家，陸續撰寫「獅頭花」、「傀儡花」和「苦楝花」三本歷史小說，「傀儡花」不但獲得文學獎，還翻拍成電視劇「斯卡羅」。

Mingli Village in Hualien covered in rocks after flooding by Fung-wong

Mingli Village in Hualien’s Wanrong Township was heavily flooded last week, when Tropical Storm Fung-wong caused the Matai’an Creek barrier lake to overflow again. A week later, the village is still heavily covered in rocky debris. The township head had discouraged the public to volunteer as shovel superheros, as they did for Guangfu Township earlier, citing safety concerns.

The entire house is clogged up by rocks of all sizes. That it’s uninhabitable is an understatement.

It’s the same in another residence. The Armed Forces are here to help victims retrieve important items and documents, first and foremost.

- I’m heartbroken. I don’t know how I’ll clean this up.

The exterior is also completely littered in debris. Excavators have been digging for days on end, and finally, some roads have reopened. The village landmark, a statue of a woman with facial tattoo, was also recovered.

From a bird’s eye view, the village is completely in grey, being buried under a thick layer of mud and rocks. Heavy machinery run back and forth to clean up.

Nothing can be done. It’s all gone. Manual labor is useless. This takes heavy machinery.

The outer bands of Tropical Storm Fung-wong brought tremendous rainfall to Hualien and made the Matai’an Creek overflow again, this time affecting Mingli Village in Wanrong Township. Unlike in Guangfu Township last time, this time there were no “shovel superheroes.” The township head advised against volunteering due to safety concerns.

There aren’t as many residents here. But there are lots of large rocks. Lots. Behind us, a 2-km section of road from the 3km mark of Hualien County Road No. 45 to Mingli Village has been cleared and reopened.

The heavy machinery operator also says that it may take another four days for the cleanup to make meaningful progress. It’s been almost a week since the flooding but the road to recovery has only just begun.

NT$10,000 cash pickup at post offices to follow ID number-based system

Millions of people have already received their NT$10,000 cash handout from the government. Starting on Nov. 24, people who haven’t gotten it yet can also pick up their cash from post offices. Chunghwa Post said the pickup day will depend on the last digit of your ID number to manage crowds.

Performers bring this news conference to life with spectacular stunts and high-energy performances, getting people excited to pick up their NT$10,000. Chunghwa Post is just about ready to start handing out cash at post offices nationwide.

During the first week, counter pickup will depend on the last digit of your ID number. If it’s odd—so one, three, five, seven, or nine—you can go on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. If it’s two, four, six, eight, or zero, you can go on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday.

To handle the crowds, post offices are to implement a traffic control system at service counters. If the last digit of your ID is odd, you can go on Monday, Wednesday, or Friday. If it’s even, you can go on Tuesday, Thursday, or Saturday. However, the restriction does not apply to those 65 or over, and those with disabilities. People are also reminded to bring the NHI card of the person whose cash they’re picking up.

The gates of the Taipei Metro always make a sound when people tap their card to enter the station. But they play different sounds for different people, as the gates are programmed with several sound and light signals depending on the ticket type and situation. For example, one sound indicates that the traveler’s card has less than NT$100 remaining.

Restaurant brings classic 17th century Dutch cuisine to Taiwan

When discussing the Netherlands, most people think of windmills and tulips. But do you know what Dutch cuisine is like? One local restaurant is offering a full Dutch menu of dishes straight from the 17th century, like beef stew with onions and mashed potato, and bitterballen. For dessert, try poffertjes with berries. Now you can taste the authentic flavors of the Netherlands without having to travel abroad.

Piping hot mashed potatoes are spread onto a plate, the chef using a spoon to create a well in the center for the beef stew. Add some frisee and parsley for garnish, and this classic dish—passed down from the 17th-century golden era of the Netherlands—is ready to serve. These bitterballen are also from that time. Minced beef and mashed potato are pressed together and fried into golden balls, crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

Indian tour guide says local sites popular with Taiwanese

After the pandemic, tourism between Taiwan and India has skyrocketed alongside economic cooperation. The Tourism Administration is promoting special tours geared toward Indian travelers, while Taiwanese have been flocking to Indian destinations, especially the “golden triangle” of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. An FTV reporter recently traveled to Jaipur, where a tour guide said that Taiwanese have been some of the main visitors to the local historic sites.

From a Jeep you can see the streets of Jaipur—the largest city in northern India’s state of Rajasthan.

Right now we’re trying out a Jeep ride. The vehicle doesn’t have any seatbelts. Along the road we can see cows and the occasional elephant. We’re on our way to the Amber Fort.

Sharing the road with elephants and cows is nothing unusual here in Jaipur, an important trading hub in northern India.

After the COVID-19 pandemic, Taiwan and India deepened their economic as well as tourism cooperation. Taiwan’s Tourism Administration encourages Indians to travel to Taiwan, while many Taiwanese are traveling to India, especially the “golden triangle” of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur.

It’s common to see street vendors hawking souvenirs and handmade crafts to passing tourists. It’s also an important revenue source for the locals.

After traveling along a very bumpy road, we finally reached the Amber Fort. Built in the 16th century, this building blends Indian and Islamic influences.

Jaipur is the administrative center of Rajasthan State as well as its trade center, with lingering traces of the historic camel caravans.
