Almost 300 classes canceled in Taipei and New Taipei due to enterovirus

Almost 300 classes were canceled in Taipei and New Taipei last week due to enterovirus infections. Over the same period, more than 17,000 medical visits were made for enterovirus symptoms, marking the second-highest figure in nearly a decade. The CDC and Ministry of Education have launched a public health campaign at schools to reinforce good hygiene habits.

Enterovirus is sweeping Taiwan. Over the past two weeks, 227 classes were canceled in Taipei, and 63 in New Taipei. The CDC and education ministry have launched a school campaign to promote enterovirus prevention.

We haven’t had any enterovirus cases in the past two weeks, but there have been students with fevers and cold symptoms due to recent weather changes. At school, we make sure the children wash their hands properly.

According to the CDC, symptoms of a potential enterovirus infection in children include confusion, reduced activity, and drowsiness. The virus is highly contagious and can easily spread among siblings. Households with children 5 and under should be particularly careful.

Last week, we added one case of severe enterovirus infection. In total, there were more than 17,000 medical visits for enterovirus symptoms. That’s the second highest figure for the same period in nearly 10 years. During the COVID pandemic, most people wore face masks and everyone paid a lot of attention to hand hygiene. Now, in the post-pandemic era, we urge children and parents to practice hand hygiene and cough etiquette.

Currently, Group A coxsackieviruses account for most of Taiwan’s infections. Enterovirus types A71 and D68, which tend to cause more severe symptoms, have only been detected in isolated clusters, but experts urge the public to stay cautious.

腸病毒高峰期! 疾管署前進幼兒園宣導"洗手七字訣"

腸病毒疫情升溫中，上週最新監測就診人次再超過1.7萬人，再創近十年同期次高，雙北停課學校逼近300班，校園如臨大敵，疾管署和教育部今天聯手前進幼兒園宣導衛教，希望小朋友在後疫情時代，不要忘記洗手七字訣「內外夾弓大立腕」。

國內正處腸病毒流行期，上兩週統計北市就因為腸病毒停課227班，新北也有63班。疾管署和教育部都到場做腸病毒防治宣導。

“最近兩週是沒有腸病毒的案例在本園，但是確實就會有發燒然後感冒的狀況，因為最近天氣比較多變一點點。在學校其實我們都會督促孩子，就是要正確洗手這件事情”

疾管署提醒，幼童腸病毒重症前兆，意識不清、活動力不佳和昏睡，提醒腸病毒傳染力強，容易在家庭手足間傳播，尤其5歲以下嬰幼兒的家庭，更要注意。

“國內上週有新增一例腸病毒重症的一個個案，健保急門診的就診人次，在上週有超過1.7萬多人次，是近十年來的(同期)次高。疫情的時候呢，大部分人都有戴口罩，大部分人都有注意手部衛生，那目前是屬於後疫情時代，我們還是要呼籲學童跟家長，還是要注意手部衛生，跟呼吸道禮節”

國內腸病毒目前仍以克沙奇A型為主，容易重症的A71型及D68型，目前都只有零星檢出，但專家呼籲別大意。
