Civic groups protest ‘undemocratic’ proceedings in legislature

2024-05-21

More than 40 civic groups have gathered outside the Legislative Yuan to protest the opposition’s push to expand parliamentary powers. They came with signs that read “No discussions, no democracy,” referring to how the KMT and TPP have used their majority to force bills through a second reading. They’re demanding that the controversial bills be reviewed again with due process.

Pushing bills through without discussion, without rationality, and without legality is not merely a black-box operation. It is the suppression of the public’s will.

I do respect the Legislative Yuan. But I also wish the Legislative Yuan could perform in a way that’s worthy of respect. I wish it could respect our democratic processes. The U.S. is big place and you might not feel that its politics affects you. The very special thing about Taiwan is you can really feel the human warmth here, and how Taiwan politics is everywhere around you. So I feel that we need to defend the things that matter to us. We all need to stand up.

Despite the rain, at least 15,000 had gathered outside the Legislative Yuan by the evening. They intend to continue their vigil until midnight, alongside the ongoing legislative session.
