Two controversial ‘reform’ bills clear second reading

2024-05-21

The parliamentary showdown continues. The KMT and TPP pushed ahead with their so-called reform bills, forcing two of them through a second reading by Tuesday afternoon. Despite high tensions between ruling and opposition lawmakers, the voting process was relatively restrained, with no physical clashes like the ones seen last week.

One bill gives the legislature greater powers when approving government personnel. The other introduces penalties for “contempt of legislature,” which includes the act of making false statements during a question-and-answer session. The green camp blasted the opposition for undermining democratic processes, by failing to engage in discussions over the bills. It also criticized legislative speaker Han Kuo-yu for starting the vote, without first verifying the number of lawmakers present.
