President Lai Ching-te had a packed schedule on his first full day in office. He welcomed a delegation from Paraguay, before attending a ceremony at the National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine. Then it was back to the Presidential Office to receive delegations from Palau, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and the U.S.

The two heads of state share a warm greeting. One day after his inauguration, President Lai Ching-te’s first order of business was to host a delegation from Paraguay, one of Taiwan’s formal allies.

I would like to thank President Pena for advocating for Taiwan at international events and supporting Taiwan’s international participation. I look forward to deepening our partnership with Paraguay, a titan in South America. Together, we will march toward freedom, stability and prosperity.

Santiago Pena
President of Paraguay
This friendship has left an indelible mark. The past 66 years demonstrate both our nations’ commitment to working together.

Paraguayan President Santiago Pena touted the solid ties between his nation and Taiwan. After the reception, Lai and Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim paid their respects at the National Revolutionary Martyrs’ Shrine, in line with tradition.

The first to arrive was Premier Cho Jung-tai, who was joined by Judicial Yuan President Hsu Tzong-li 許宗力, Examination Yuan President Huang Jong-tsun 黃榮村, and Control Yuan President Chen Chu. Legislative speaker Han Kuo-yu was the only head of the five Yuans to be absent, as he was presiding over the legislature. Once Lai and Hsiao arrived, the ceremony commenced.

The event concluded with an offering of flowers. Lai and Hsiao continued their packed schedule, going on to meet delegations from Palau, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and the U.S.
