Nvidia stock soars 2.49% ahead of Q1 earnings report

Traders are eagerly awaiting the first-quarter earnings of Nvidia, which will release results on Wednesday. In a positive sign, major investment banking firms have increased their price target for Nvidia stock. In a note on Monday, Barclays increased its target from US$850 to US$1,100. Wall Street is also optimistic: On Monday, Nvidia rose 2.49% to close at US$947.80.

We could see quarterly revenue reach a new high of US$26 billion. Gross margin could soar from 72% to 77%. Before the report’s release, I think we’ll see considerable fluctuation. It’s important to watch the market for signs that it’s already digested the good news.

In a Bloomberg interview released Monday, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang was asked if Taiwan factored into his decision-making. Huang replied that Taiwan was the center of the world’s technology supply chain, and that he needed Taiwan to do his job.

另外，20號黃仁勳接受彭博訪問，主持人問，台灣新總統上任，輝達倚賴台積電生產晶片，是否有關注台灣和中國現況。黃仁勳回答，台灣是全球技術供應鏈中心，若沒有台灣，他無法做好工作，很難服務其他公司，科技產業相當程度倚賴台灣，而且會持續一段時間。

Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is back in Taiwan for his third visit. A day after attending the presidential inauguration, Pompeo spoke at a book event organized by the Formosa Republican Association. Once again, he called on the U.S. to recognize Taiwan as an independent and sovereign nation. He also endorsed President Lai Ching-te’s declaration that the R.O.C. and PRC are “not subordinate to each other.”

Former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo takes the stage to a round of applause. Known for his vocal support of Taiwan during his term, Pompeo is back on the island. On Tuesday, he promoted his new book at an event organized by the Formosa Republican Association.

It’s time for the United States to recognize Taiwan as a sovereign and independent country. It’s not just a gesture or diplomatic nicety. Recognizing this place, Taiwan, as an independent and sovereign and free nation – it’s true.

Pompeo was appointed the Trump administration’s top diplomat in 2018. He was instrumental in shaping Washington’s China policy, which included strong trade sanctions and other countermeasures. He angered Beijing by criticizing its human rights record, and by repeatedly expressing support for Taiwan. He’s seen as a key contributor to the recent warming of Taiwan-U.S. relations.

That breaks my heart. ….demonstrating to anyone who had any doubt in their mind that America and allies of Taiwan around the world will stand with them even in the most difficult times.

He was asked for comment on President Lai Ching-te’s declaration, that the “Republic of China and the People’s Republic of China are not subordinate to each other.” The remark, made during Lai’s inaugural speech, was criticized by the KMT for raising tensions in the Taiwan Strait. Pompeo disagreed.

Pompeo endorsed Lai’s statement. He also emphasized the need for continued U.S.-Taiwan collaboration to maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.

Mass stabbing on Taichung MRT leaves two victims in hospital

A mass stabbing occurred on the Taichung MRT Tuesday morning, leaving two people hospitalized. The suspect is a 20-year-old man surnamed Hung, who boarded the Shui-an Temple Station with three knives. As soon as he got on the train, he began a random stabbing spree, but was subdued by three brave passengers.

The suspect, wearing a brown jacket, first attacks a passenger with a kitchen knife. After being disarmed, he quickly picks up a fruit knife from the floor.

Knife in hand, he walks to the other side of the car and continues his attack.

Passengers rush to stop him, and a man in black manages to grab the assailant’s hand.

People started to tackle him, and I ended up grabbing his arm. He still had a fruit knife. Everyone was hitting him on the head.

There was people and he was coming toward us with a knife, after he hit the man in the neck, I think. And we grabbed him and started to hit him in the head, and grab his shirt, and try to pull him down.

The incident occurred on the Taichung MRT just after 11 in the morning. The suspect boarded at Shui-an Temple Station. As the train moved toward Taichung City Hall, he launched an indiscriminate attack.

The attacker did not know the victims. An investigation is underway to establish a motive.

The suspect is a 20-year-old man surnamed Hung. After being subdued by passengers, he was taken to the hospital under police surveillance. He is being investigated for attempted murder.

Before being loaded on the ambulance, the suspect reportedly apologized. Two passengers who had tried to stop him were also sent to the hospital with injuries.

One victim is a 17-year-old who sustained three lacerations totaling 22 centimeters, across his right shoulder, right side of his chest, and right upper arm. These were all muscle injuries.

His father says he understands that this was an unforeseeable event. He says his family can get by, so he wants to donate any consolation payments to Taichung’s emergency relief account. I said there was no need, but he insisted.

The other victim was a 27-year-old man, who sustained a 9-centimeter gash on his face.

The young man in question, surnamed Hsu, is an award-winning power lifter. After the incident, his Instagram account was flooded with messages from fans calling him a hero and thanking him for his bravery.

Indian yoga instructor branches out to restaurant industry after traffic accident

Today we take you to meet Minesh Valand, a yoga instructor and a restaurant owner from India. He moved to Taichung in 2009 and began teaching yoga for a few years. However, due to a traffic accident he took a break from teaching and started his own Indian restaurant. FTV reporter Stephany Yang spoke to Valand to learn more about his career as a yoga teacher and restaurant founder.

Valand used to be a computer hardware engineer until he saw the benefits of yoga and decided to quit his job to teach yoga full-time.

I was crossing almost like touching to 100 kilograms like 99 kilograms. I started yoga practice and in two months I lost the weight. My master inspired me to go with the yoga. My family is here so I am happy and definitely Taiwan is the destination. I hope to let people know what is yoga. Now I am capable to do so definitely something will come out sooner or later.

Valand moved to Taiwan in 2009 and began teaching yoga. Due to a motorcycle accident, he stopped teaching yoga for a few years.

I had several damages on my body. Hands, legs, and skulls, and a lot of many places. So from there, I stopped yoga but in 2019 again I got up from the bed.

He opened his first Indian restaurant in 2015. Later, he opened up other restaurants across Taiwan. One of his recent achievements was making it onto Michelin’s new Taichung list of recommended Bib Gourmand eateries.

I was missing Indian food so I chose to have an Indian restaurant. I opened my first restaurant in 2015. I have five stores. Four in Taichung, one in Hsinchu, and one more is coming up a vegetarian restaurant in Hsinchu.

Having lived in Taiwan for 15 years, Valand hopes to continue to introduce both authentic cuisine and culture from India to more people in Taiwan.
