Annual military village festival in Taoyuan, to last until Oct. 20

2024-10-17

The 2024 Taoyuan Military Village Festival kicked off on Oct. 5 this year. It’s now in its 24th edition, and will last until Oct. 20. The annual event commemorates a unique culture: that belonging to veterans and their dependents who’d come to Taiwan with the Nationalist government after World War II. During the first week of the festival, visitors participated in a street march at the Matsu New Village. This was only one of the many events that’ll allow visitors a glimpse into a bygone but unforgotten era.

The kids are all wearing a T-shirt and an afro wig with the national flag’s colorway, and waving the national flag. They’re all here to take part in the street march that’s part of the program in the 2024 Taoyuan Military Village Festival.

The current edition of the festival is centered on three themes: co-creation, re-evoking memories, and unlocking the secrets of military dependents’ villages. Events take place in the area formed by the three most famous military dependents’ villages in Taoyuan over the course of 16 days.

Su Chun-pin
Taoyuan deputy mayor
The annual military village festival kicks off on the eve of National Day. We’d like to express gratitude to the military personnel who’ve defended our country, the ROC. Because of the military villages and the many veterans and their dependents, Taoyuan is all the more diverse.

The festival kicked off its first week at the Matsu New Village, while the second week focuses on culinary experiences at the Taiwu New Village. In the final days of the festival, visitors can experience a typical day for former residents at the Xianguang Second Village.

Su Chun-pin
Taoyuan deputy mayor
From the Kamezilla public artwork to the street march, we’ve planned a series of events. We want to preserve the best of military village culture in Taiwan, whether it’s the cuisine, literature, culture, street plans and landscapes, and of course defending our country and our homes. We want these to be passed down from one generation to the next.

The history of military dependants’ villages is kept alive in Taoyuan, thanks to the many events during the annual military village festival.
