Smoke generators deployed in Hualien drill at dawn

A thick fog appeared in the coast of Hualien this morning, as the Army held an exercise with its M56 Coyote smoke generators. The drill was held in Ji’an, and simulated the response to a potential PLA beach landing at dawn. The generators produce a thick smoke that conceals Taiwanese troops on land while disrupting enemy radar and infrared systems.
Thick smoke obscures the view as its spreads from the coast out to sea. It doesn’t come from a wildfire, but from a military smoke screen drill.
At about 5 a.m. on Thursday, the Army’s Huadong Defense Command deployed chemical warfare troops and M56 Coyote smoke generators to Ji’an in Hualien, to hold a large-scale smoke screen exercise simulating a PLA beach landing at dawn. The smoke can conceal tanks, infantry and troops deployed onshore, while making it more difficult for the enemy to identify suitable landing sites. It makes for an effective defensive measure that can also thwart the enemy’s strategy.
The M56 Coyote smoke generators played a key role in the exercise. They were procured in 2004 for the Army’s chemical warfare units. The generators use high-temperature atomization technology to produce a dense smoke that obscures vision and interferes with radars, providing cover for Taiwan’s military. The thick plumes of smoke attracted the attention of locals exercising in the morning, as well as military enthusiasts who had come to the area specifically to take pictures.

Amid China’s continued harassment, Taiwan is sticking to its policy of no-provocation, while making sure its defenses are ready should there be a need to respond.

日前中國舉行聯合利劍軍演，在台灣周遭進行環島演習。國軍也展開極進的防禦演練。今天早上陸軍花東防衛指揮部，在花蓮"化仁海堤"，實施煙幕演練，透過渦輪發煙車，噴出大量煙霧，遮蔽海上視線，不但干擾敵軍雷達、紅外線的偵測與攻擊，同時也掩蔽我方部隊部署。
大量煙霧遮蔽視線，一路從海堤蔓延到海面上，這煙霧不是火災，而是國軍正在進行煙幕掩護演練。
陸軍花東防衛指揮部，周四早上五點多，在花蓮吉安鄉化仁海堤，出動化學兵連，M56土狼式渦輪發煙車，進行大規模的煙幕演練。模擬中國解放軍，拂曉登陸。國軍藉著煙霧，一方面掩護我軍戰車、步兵等兵力的部署，另一方面藉由濃煙，讓敵方難以辨別合適登陸地點，達到有效防禦、欺敵的戰略效果。
其中，這回擔綱演習主力的M56土狼式渦輪發煙車，是2004年國軍採購，配置在陸軍化學兵群，主要是以高溫霧化技術生成濃煙，具有遮蔽視線，干擾敵軍雷達偵測、掩護我軍等效果。不過，演練時的濃煙，反倒引起晨運民眾注意，甚至還有軍事迷，專程來拍照。

當前中國不斷對台挑釁，而我方即便不挑起戰爭，該做的防禦依舊不能少，才能在有個萬一的狀況下，迅速作出有效反制。
