Exhibition shows international links in Taiwan’s journey to democracy

A new exhibition highlights Taiwan’s long journey towards democracy. It’s on at the National 228 Memorial Museum, to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the World Federation of Taiwanese Associations. Visitors can see many historical documents on display in Taiwan for the first time, such as journals of Taiwanese Independence groups that operated outside Taiwan, during the period of martial law. It highlights the international connections that helped Taiwanese activists push for democracy, which was implemented in Taiwan in the 1990s.
Taiwanese singer Chu Yueh-hsin, better known by his stage name Pigheadskin, sings about longing for Taiwan while living overseas. This was the opening of the 50-year anniversary retrospective exhibition for the World Federation of Taiwanese Associations, held at the National 228 Memorial Museum. Lots of veteran democracy advocates turned out to mark the occasion.

Taiwan got lots of wrong ways of thinking from KMT education. It gave us lots of wrong ideas. Luckily, while we were abroad, our compatriots abroad gave us new ideas. Some of the guiding concepts and methods of the Formosa movement were brought back from overseas and taught to us.

If it weren’t for you, we wouldn’t be here today. Let’s use this opportunity. There are 50 years of experience that we can take our time to look at and learn from. The most important thing is that we continue to fight with all our might for the spirit of this movement, to work together for this land, for Taiwan.
Throughout Taiwan’s half-century of martial law, overseas Taiwanese activists supported the democracy movement in Taiwan. The power of civil society gradually turned Taiwan from an oppressive authoritarian state into a free and democratic country. The exhibition includes never-before shown in Taiwan reproductions of the WTFA publication, “Taiwan Season Journal,” as well as “Courrier des Formosans,” the journal of the European Federation of Taiwanese Associations. There are also many documents about the movement by politically “blacklisted” expatriates to force their way back into Taiwan.

Many people went on the blacklist for no apparent reason. So this shows what was happening behind the scenes, how they were monitored, how moles infiltrated their associations and reported their whereabouts to the authorities. “So-and-so got on such-and-such a bus, at this time, going to this destination,” and so on. They were obviously following their targets very closely.
Tour guides at the exhibition will show visitors around, hoping the event will raise awareness about the history of democracy in Taiwan.

世界台灣同鄉會聯合會成立50週年，特別在二二八國家紀念館舉辦50周年回顧展，更首度展出"海外台灣人黑名單闖關"相關檔案。也邀請不少民主前輩出席開幕式，一同來見證這段台灣民主重要歷史。

在長達半世紀的戒嚴年代，海外台灣人運用國際連結，支持台灣民主運動，結合公民力量，讓台灣逐漸從高壓統治成為一個民主自由的國家。這次展覽也首次在台灣展出世台會刊物"台灣季刊"復刻本、歐洲台灣協會刊物"鄉訊"復刻本、以及"海外台灣人黑名單闖關"相關檔案。

“因為很多人真的是，不明不白就成為黑名單，其實就是呈現說，他背後到底是怎麼樣，他們怎麼樣被監視，有人藏身在他們成員裡面，去報告說他們行蹤是怎樣，誰誰誰搭什麼車，幾點搭到哪去，很顯然就是非常貼身跟在旁邊”
導覽員一一介紹，希望藉此讓更多人，深刻認識台灣的民主歷程。
